St. George the Martyr
May 1, 2010 – Baramudah 23
Memory Verse
“Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.”
(Hebrews 13:7)
A Christian Soldier
St. George was born in Cappadocia in 280 A.D.
He believed in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
When he was 20 years old, his mother died.
He joined the army in the reign of King Diocletian the Pagan….
What does the word pagan mean?
the worship of idols
Helps the Needy
St. George became lead soldier
King Diocletian persecuted the Christians.
When St. George heard about this he sold all his property and gave the money to the needy and poor and let all the slaves he had free.
Why do you hate me?
He met the king to defend the Christians and said to him:
“ Why do your majesty, show anger to the Christians who are humble, modest, and righteous people?”
“Why do you force them to follow a religion, you yourself don’t know if it is true or not– for you believe in idols made of stones and not God.”
Jesus is the one true God.
Without Fear
The king became very furious because of these words and courage:
“So are you Christian too?”
St. George without fear said:
“I am the servant of Christ Jesus and I trust in Him. That is why I have come to you to bear witness to the truth.”
My Lord Jesus Whom I Love
The King said:
“I promoted you and raised incense to the idol and I will give you a big reward.”
St. George:
“I pray my God to bring you to Him so that you yourself my worship Him and leave the worship of idols.”
How can I deny My Lord Jesus Christ whom I love?
The Lord Healed Him
The king was furious because of his words and he tormented him severely.
He put him inside a machine full of swords to cut his flesh into pieces and force him to deny his faith.
The saint prayed and begged the Lord to help him.
The Lord healed him.
I will not deny You
Then the king put him in hot lime, but the Lord delivered him.
The saint kept saying:
“How can I deny my Lord Jesus Christ?”
At last they cut his head with the sword and he attained the crown of martyrdom.
Conclusion
Do you declare the truth to every person on every occasion?
Do not worry about people’s opinion of you, but do the things that please the Lord.
We must obey God rather than men… This is the cross waiting for you.
“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
