  • Networking for Career Success
  • What isNetwork
It is an association of individuals having a common interest, formed to provide mutual assistance, helpful information or the like.
  • What can a network do
    for you?
  • Networking contacts can help with job leads
    Contacts provide referrals
Contacts can provide insider information about companies you could use
Contacts can provide information on career fields you might want to explore
  • Networks can lead you to job markets in remote locations
Network contacts can provide advice on where to look for jobs
    Contacts can review your resume
  • Whom to include
    in your network
  • You can include absolutely anyone
    Make sure to include
    • Past and present co-workers
    • Friends with similar interests
    • Colleagues from business associations
    • Alumni from your university
    • Chance acquaintances
    • Formal introductions
  • How to improve
    Networking
  • Become the person people want to meet
    Having a jovial personality helps
If you are easily approachable others who are networking will find their way to you
    Smile often and be helpful
Correspond regularly with contacts (email, phone call – if permitted)
  • Be more interested in others
It is unreasonable to believe that simply knowing someone with valid credentials will do your career good
If you know the contact more intimately than the other candidates you stand a better chance
Listening to others speak about themselves is a good way of getting to know them though it can be difficult
Remember, if you want others to be an audience to your elevator pitch, you should return the favor.
  • Be more concerned with collecting
business cards than handing them out.
It’s common courtesy to offer help if you expect it from someone
If you hand out a card without getting one in return you leave the ball in their court
You will have no way of contacting them again
  • Take Notes
Jot down pointers listing topics you talked about
Follow up and remind them what you talked about
It’s more likely that the contact will recall you if you have this information
Showing them you were actually paying attention to what was being said makes a great impression
  • End notes
    On
    Career Networking
  • Importance of networking shouldn’t be discounted while job hunting
Networking should be an integral part of your daily conduct
    Networking isn’t rocket science
If you are friendly and exchange phone numbers you are already networking. Just remember to use the information when thinking about you career
