Preface
This writing is a coworking project between Perus Saranurak and
Wenyuan Hu (Ryan) to report the working process in “Metadesign
project 2: Metadesign and Lucky People” in MA Design Futures in
Goldsmith, University of London. This course leads by Dr Mathilda
Tham.
This project starts with the method for dividing the students into
co-working groups. Firstly, we decide to share three keywords from
each student for mapping the islands of interests. Than we share
ideas for making each island clarify. After that everyone choose the
specific island for doing this co-working project. Perus and Ryan
become a team because we both are interested in “communication” and
“changing lifestyle”.
Self-introduction:
Ryan had worked in advertising agencies before. As a creative
designer, Ryan always tries to uncover the authentic connection in
the society (clients and target audiences) in a creative way. Based
on his working experiences, Ryan has well understanding about the
users. It is probably the first step for building the communication.
In this future scenario project, Ryan tries to contribute his
knowledge and research (the social media and technology) for the
cooperation work to construct a challenging and complicated future.
Perus had worked as product and packaging design in a brand
consultant company. From that experience, Perus founds that the
design capacities can create and communicate consumer experiences,
which sometimes can change the attitudes and beliefs of consumers.
That makes Perus turn his interests to the area of mental design,
design in the state of perception, cognition and attitude. In this
project, Perus tries to experiment the potential of designs (futures
stories) which can affect and challenge the world views. At the same
time, Perus tries to create dynamics of creative conversation in
this co-creation teamwork.
We believe that:
As a human, we are social animals and companion species.
Essentially, we are wishful for communicating with others (friends,
strangers, pets, nature). At same time, the social interaction is an
approach to understand ourselves. Our ontology and identities are
shaped by the outside by associate with the world, the nature,
environments, technologies, societies and others. Nowadays, the
technology can be seen as a catalyst speedups our evolution. We make
each other up. We expect the better connection and communication
between the individual and the world can promote the better self-
understanding, more independent personality and to creative
alternative of being in the future(s).
2
For changing the world to be more sustainable, it could start with
raising diversity. We believe that motivating an alternative will be
more resilient rather than offering a uniform approach.
Unfortunately, people are getting uniform, not only because we will
have similar life style (according to The Endless City, 2007. In
2050, there will be 75 percent of global population will live in
cities). Moreover, the uniform value system retracts diversity
ideologically. Also, change has different in scale. In our project
we focus on the biggest scale, transformation (Sterling, 2001: 78
cited by Tham, 2014), which means a change by creative re-visioning.
For creating the change for sustainability, we believe that it needs
to create the mindset that opens for understanding and accepting the
diversity. Also, to enrich the diversity we have to have a better
communication, which enable us to transfer our difference and
respect others, including animals and nature.
As Anette Lundebye calls the breakthrough question; this belief
motivated us to step out of a comfort zone into the unknown areas to
create this project be more challenging.

Our ideas for futures scenarios
FIGURE 2 THE THINKING PROCESS VISUALIZATION
This (figure 2) is the map showing the whole process of our
conceptual generating; from the first idea (Attitude of Makers, to
the second idea (Chat UP Chat Up), and the final idea (Neuron+
System). Through the sharing process on classes and analysis
feedback, we had dug deeper to the expectation of the course and
unique personality of our group.

IDEA: ATTITUDE OF MAKERS
Studying in sustainability and sociability allows us to have a big
view of our society. We began with a sort of environmental friendly
design thinking, came out with a changing community to engage people
in spirit of maker. We called it Attitude of Makers. In generally,
it was an idea which based on workshop to raise the confidence of
making, to be against the rampant consumerism of contemporary
society. Wenyuan, he had a self-observation about comparison of his
father and himself. When both of them facing the issue of vehicle
failure, he is more willing to pay for professional to fix the
problem. By contrast, his father prefers to have an attempt by
himself. With his toolkit, Wenyuan’s father finally solved the
problem. It probably is not a common example, but there is something
5
in common in our societies, especially in younger generation. We are
lack of sense of making, experience of making and confidence of
making, rather than the capacity of making. We are surrounded by
solutions which can simply solve our requirements by pay for it. It
seems to be the best approach to satisfy our desires. However, the
purchasing and consumption of material products has become ever more
ingrained within modern society. Over consumption has become
somewhat of an epidemic in the sense that is contributes greatly to
waste product, environment damage, ethical and social issues.
Furthermore, the consumptive anaclisis restricts people’s creativity
and creative confidence.
The project “Attitude of Makers” aims to free people from
consumptive anaclisis, to encourage the maker attitude. Engaging
people in makers’ social reality, the project also can encourage the
creativity and sociability by sharing capacities and skills.
However, The Attitude of Makers was more focus on the solution for
current situation. It was clear that the scenario is not challenging
enough to motivate a complex context of futures. We got a lot of
positive feedbacks from the class. For next step, we would try to
involve more bold assumptions in order to create more inspirations.
As a result, the Attitude of Makers was just the beginning of our
thinking progress, but it offered us a focusing point, which is the
possibility of raising people’s capacity in social context.

IDEA: Chat UP Chat UP
For creating a challenging idea, we try to challenge ourselves. We
hold the previous idea and start an imaginative discussion in the
College Green of Goldsmiths. We think a relaxing and opening
environment has effects to our thinking and discussion. In this
opened mind discussion, we share many opportunities in futures in
many areas. Many ideas relate to the effects from the development of
future technology on society, such as alternative energy source,
transportation, data, online community. As a result, our curiosity
states on the change of relationship value; technology helps to
connect far away persons, but disconnect from the person beside;
losing an awareness of face-to-face relationship. For the
breakthrough question, we come up with how to make people can feel
aware about their relationship.
However, the overwhelming overspreading internet creates a virtual
world occupied numerous users’ life, not only time, but also
creativities. In instances, more and more creative involved in
online business, and a number of brilliant ideas are created.
Because of the advertising work experiences, Ryan has a lot of case
studies about those creative industries. We tried to transplant an
idea which only works in internet to the physical world in order to
balance the virtual world and real world in the future, and also
extend the impact of creativities.
6
For the methodology, Perus compares a relationship value with an
exchange value. The exchange value, represented in form of price,
has money as a tool for objectification. Consequently, people can
clearly measure its value and develop the way to use it. In
contrary, the relationship also has own value and using benefits. If
it has a physically representative tool, it could increase the
awareness of the relationship, which should be more considered than
the exchange value.
For bring it to the changing process, we decide to create future
scenarios. According to the Audio Tooth Implant designed by design
by James Auger & Jimmy Loizeau in 2001, this project designs a
realistic electronic tooth as a radical concept in personal
communication. This can create a stunning relevant scenario.
Therefore, we decide create the conceptual product for representing
our concept. Base on the possibility of current technology, we can
design the device to reveal the network of relationship as a
personal data (small data). Perus, as a product designer, sees the
potentials in wearable devices. Likewise, Ryan has the experiences
in using wearable devices to detect how healthy of his daily
activities. We design the wearable device and call it “Chat UP Chat
UP”. As a result, we came out with an idea that inspired by the idea
of mutual friends in social network. Showing the mutual friends to
the strangers online is one of the most efficient approaches to
extend users’ social network. With the purpose, we designed a
wearable device which can visualise the information of mutual
friends to uncover the invisible social potential in physical world.
In the future, if people had unlimited social resource, it will be a
huge impact on their daily life.
In presentation, Perus creates a workshop to let the group imagine
they are in the part of awkward scenario; (he tries to use the idea
of hypnotization) in the public place, such as tube station,
everyone create their new name that makes them become a stranger for
others. The workshop lets them try to find the way to start
discussing with strangers. As the result, they try to start with
anything in common, such as tube’s schedule, time, weather or news.
After the workshop he introduces our relationship is also the common
thing. By our designed device, our relationship data will be
visualized and can be used beneficially. This seems success to make
the group see the awareness of relationship.
On the other hands, we think this idea is still not challenge enough
because we look at the near prospect and the outcome is based on
current technology. Moreover, there are many feedbacks about privacy
issue. Actually, the privacy issue is a controversial topic which
becomes more serious progressively. This issue lights our curiosity
to explore the solution of privacy issue which probably will happen
in futures.

IDEA: The futures of privacy:
In our third idea, we involved in interaction design, product
design, bio-hacking and etc. There was a wide range of facilitating
interdisciplinary research. Based on early evidences, we came out
with an idea, Neuron+ system, which is a digital device, an open
platform connected with human nervous system by hypodermic
implanted. It would be an approach to intensify or even create human
sensation and perception. The story of Edward Snowden inspired us in
the project. Edward Snowden is a former employee of the Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA) and former contractor for the National
Security Agency (NSA). And he also is the first person who made us
seriously reflect on the right of digital privacy, the surveillance
and internet freedom. The privacy probably will be one of the most
serious issues in the future, especially in digital world. We expect
there would be some approaches can support the privacy protection.
With this purpose, we came out the personal data security Neuron+
system. The Sensor+ connects with your online personal data. We
describe it as digital skin. It has similar features as human skin,
which can protect our body from outside world and perceive the
physical world. The cold, heat, touch, punch, etc. will be
transformed to be bio-electric single to the brain. The Sensor+ will
transform all of data to Neuron+ which connects with human nervous
system. Therefore, people can have a sort of physical perception
about online personal data, which will be much more sensitive ever.
Like human skin, the physical sense of perception is so sensitive,
therefore it allows people to distinguish between friendly contact
and despiteful. Harvey Fineberg (2011), in his TED speech, claims
human beings are facing neo-evolution. There is a choice offered by
technology can extend human capacities. Fineberg defines it as
self-directed evolution. In instance, the Neuron+ system can create
an entirely new sensation and perception, not genetically but
physically. In the future, every internet user will have extremely
close connection with their personal data and see the data as the
part of body that can sense it and keep it safe. As a result, people
can have instant reflection of their digital privacy issues. We try
to use the idea to create a future scenario which is about a
relatively free internet environment, highly security personal data.
However, does it mean personal data will be entirely safe in the
future? While following understanding stakeholders by stakeholder
dialogue in the future scenarios we found the reality was much more
complex than our expected. Nevertheless, it is what the future
scenario supposed to be. As Heron and Reason (1987) state that, “the
outcome of inquiries do not have to be confined to the traditional
written report, they can pioneer aesthetic presentations as
informative outcomes, and to find action-oriented ways of sharing
transformative outcomes.” We were not creating utopia, but some
stories about humanity.

The amoeba of culture change:
There was a very inspired workshop with MA Fashion students in
class, called change agency workshop. During the process, we were
fully engaged in changing agency in social context. Different
individuals played different roles with their specific purpose.
Therefore, there should be a dynamic approach to communicate with
outside world. For the future scenario, we used this approach to
understand the stakeholders which not only helped us to classify our
stakeholders, but also offered a pointcut to build up a
conversation. We defined that the understanding of change agency
workshop is a sort of experience of outside system. We have to
cooperate with the outside world to achieve our goals. Furthermore,
the other idea offered a slight difference. The idea of Amoeba is
much more about internal system. As our understanding, the idea of
Amoeba represented how a society, a group or an individual changes.
It is the reason why we considered it as changing internal system.
For example, even there are only two people in our group; each of us
has numerous characters. There are innovators, transformers,
unwilling laggards, etc. It is impossible to simplify one society,
one group, even one person in one character. This is because they
would be changed when the scenario changes. Therefore, the change
agency workshop and amoeba system construct our understanding of
outside and inside system. What makes the society developing and how
to motivate other participators join in the progress?
However, it will be extremely complex and tangled process when
people thinking the outside system, they have to reflect their
internal purpose. But if we can unify individual purpose into other
stakeholder’s value system, it will be extremely easy for making
sense with each other. The coherence will allow the process of
changing to be more efficient. This is how an amoeba moves. The
amoeba moves with internal purpose and close connections of outside
world.
In our future scenario, we tried to use this method to develop and
uncover the stakeholders in the future culture change. In the third
idea, the purpose of creating hypodermic implanted devices is a
solution for protect personal online data and raising the democracy
on internet. The economy benefit will be a sort of assisting issue
in order to support program operation. As a result, there will be a
group of stakeholders, such as, internet users, programmers,
doctors, media, politicians, marketing, socialist, hackers, etc.
They will make the future scenario unpredictable complexity.
Because, each of them are against and supporting each other. We
tried to bring them in a specific context in order to visualise the
reasonable view of the future.
11
Mapping relations between
stakeholders
The idea of Amoeba of culture change helps us to understand the
elements of change and the change dynamic. From this idea, we can
develop our project into the flow of change by analysing and
choosing the relevant stakeholders, and mapping the relationship
between them.
The Stakeholders wheel:
From our “future of privacy” project, we can plot our stakeholders
in 10 different roles. The most clearly visible stakeholders who
will got the directly benefit is an internet users (10), programmers
(2) and doctors (3); the internet users will feel safe from using
Neuron+ system to protect their personal data; the programmers have
new business opportunities they can involve; and also the doctor
will see the development of the new potential area in their career,
as a plastic surgery doctor who develop into the beauty business. In
the other ways, this project also requires some programmers (2) and
doctor (3) for their profession. Also, we (1) as the inventors can
achieve our purpose which we want to create the internet (9) to be
the safety place for everyone, the internet user (10). Therefore, we
(1) need the promotional media (4) to support this project to
broaden this concept to the society. And Neuron+ system can be a new
promotional strategy vice versa.
In contrary, politicians (especially the American government) and
the data company (5) will counter on this at first because it create
the democratic phenomenon on the internet, they would be the
‘Reactionaries’ (in the Amoeba model) because now they are powerful
by governing the internet users (10) data. This powerful
counterforce could be failed by weighting with the demand from the
population of internet users (10) which keeps rapidly increasing.
Furthermore, the business strategists (6), socialists (7), and the
internet security (8) would not get a direct effect, but this
project could extend their professional area where they can develop
new researches and strategies further.
FIGURE 5
12
5 STAKEHOLDEERS WHEEL
13
Steps further for creating
Change:
The change idea has to spread to the related stakeholders to create
change. In the early step, it could be broadly promoted by one-way
communication, such as posters and advertise, for catching the
‘Transformer’, according to the Amoeba of culture change, who would
be interested.
In the step further, it needs a collective workshop to communicate
this idea with all stakeholders. The workshop can inform relation
between each role and allows the stakeholders to exchange their
opinions. This workshop has to clearly communicate to the
participants. For this project, a short movie could be the best way
to communicate the future scenarios. Furthermore, the workshop could
be built as the exhibition, which shows the diverse scenarios from
different area of stakeholders.
14
What we learned from
collaborative working?
From the first idea to the third idea, as a team we had many long
discussions and many times self-observations in order to understand
ourselves and each other. It was entirely different that two people
work as a team, rather than three or more. We tried to build up a
dialogue in our cooperation in stand of holding and arguing with
individual point of views. In a previous essay (Creative
Collaboration within Dialogue), Ryan had further research about how
to elevate the create collaboration by changing the way of
communication. In a dialogue, “We are not play game against each
other, but with each other.” (Bohm, 2004) Through the design
methods, such as positioning tool, idea mapping, we motivated a
dynamic flowing understanding in our team. By these tools we
developed our discussion from the level of head-discussion (thinking
base) to stomach-discussion (sensing base) by transforming ideas to
the sensible world. It is valuable experience for each of us,
because without the coherence we cannot achieve any expectation
together, otherwise, it would not be a successful collaboration.
Both of us had been out of individual comfort zone to involve in the
other’s interesting areas. We believe this kind of collaboration has
great potential to bring out widespread ideas which is beyond each
individual possibility, because it is very necessary for the complex
future scenarios. Furthermore, all of these understandings are not
just our blueprinting. The above-mentioned report about the process
of developing ideas is the best evidence for our collaboration.
Though this course, our team changed our ideas three times. We saw
it as a development of our views and understandings in futures
scenarios method from the beginning. From the first class, we though
the concept of futures scenarios is to design something for a
possible future. By this project, we keep developing our
understanding about futures scenarios through presenting ideas and
getting feedbacks. Finally, we found the future scenario is a
fascinating idealistic space where some critical problematic ideas
could drag to, also it is necessary to be possible. To challenge
others, we have to challenge ourselves to step to the unknown area
and explore it.

  • 3. 1 Preface This writing is a coworking project between Perus Saranurak and Wenyuan Hu (Ryan) to report the working process in “Metadesign project 2: Metadesign and Lucky People” in MA Design Futures in Goldsmith, University of London. This course leads by Dr Mathilda Tham. This project starts with the method for dividing the students into co-working groups. Firstly, we decide to share three keywords from each student for mapping the islands of interests. Than we share ideas for making each island clarify. After that everyone choose the specific island for doing this co-working project. Perus and Ryan become a team because we both are interested in “communication” and “changing lifestyle”. Self-introduction: Ryan had worked in advertising agencies before. As a creative designer, Ryan always tries to uncover the authentic connection in the society (clients and target audiences) in a creative way. Based on his working experiences, Ryan has well understanding about the users. It is probably the first step for building the communication. In this future scenario project, Ryan tries to contribute his knowledge and research (the social media and technology) for the cooperation work to construct a challenging and complicated future. Perus had worked as product and packaging design in a brand consultant company. From that experience, Perus founds that the design capacities can create and communicate consumer experiences, which sometimes can change the attitudes and beliefs of consumers. That makes Perus turn his interests to the area of mental design, design in the state of perception, cognition and attitude. In this project, Perus tries to experiment the potential of designs (futures stories) which can affect and challenge the world views. At the same time, Perus tries to create dynamics of creative conversation in this co-creation teamwork. We believe that: As a human, we are social animals and companion species. Essentially, we are wishful for communicating with others (friends, strangers, pets, nature). At same time, the social interaction is an approach to understand ourselves. Our ontology and identities are shaped by the outside by associate with the world, the nature, environments, technologies, societies and others. Nowadays, the technology can be seen as a catalyst speedups our evolution. We make each other up. We expect the better connection and communication between the individual and the world can promote the better self- understanding, more independent personality and to creative alternative of being in the future(s).
  • 4. 2 For changing the world to be more sustainable, it could start with raising diversity. We believe that motivating an alternative will be more resilient rather than offering a uniform approach. Unfortunately, people are getting uniform, not only because we will have similar life style (according to The Endless City, 2007. In 2050, there will be 75 percent of global population will live in cities). Moreover, the uniform value system retracts diversity ideologically. Also, change has different in scale. In our project we focus on the biggest scale, transformation (Sterling, 2001: 78 cited by Tham, 2014), which means a change by creative re-visioning. For creating the change for sustainability, we believe that it needs to create the mindset that opens for understanding and accepting the diversity. Also, to enrich the diversity we have to have a better communication, which enable us to transfer our difference and respect others, including animals and nature. As Anette Lundebye calls the breakthrough question; this belief motivated us to step out of a comfort zone into the unknown areas to create this project be more challenging.

  • 6. 4 Our ideas for futures scenarios FIGURE 2 THE THINKING PROCESS VISUALIZATION This (figure 2) is the map showing the whole process of our conceptual generating; from the first idea (Attitude of Makers, to the second idea (Chat UP Chat Up), and the final idea (Neuron+ System). Through the sharing process on classes and analysis feedback, we had dug deeper to the expectation of the course and unique personality of our group. 1st IDEA: ATTITUDE OF MAKERS Studying in sustainability and sociability allows us to have a big view of our society. We began with a sort of environmental friendly design thinking, came out with a changing community to engage people in spirit of maker. We called it Attitude of Makers. In generally, it was an idea which based on workshop to raise the confidence of making, to be against the rampant consumerism of contemporary society. Wenyuan, he had a self-observation about comparison of his father and himself. When both of them facing the issue of vehicle failure, he is more willing to pay for professional to fix the problem. By contrast, his father prefers to have an attempt by himself. With his toolkit, Wenyuan’s father finally solved the problem. It probably is not a common example, but there is something
  • 7. 5 in common in our societies, especially in younger generation. We are lack of sense of making, experience of making and confidence of making, rather than the capacity of making. We are surrounded by solutions which can simply solve our requirements by pay for it. It seems to be the best approach to satisfy our desires. However, the purchasing and consumption of material products has become ever more ingrained within modern society. Over consumption has become somewhat of an epidemic in the sense that is contributes greatly to waste product, environment damage, ethical and social issues. Furthermore, the consumptive anaclisis restricts people’s creativity and creative confidence. The project “Attitude of Makers” aims to free people from consumptive anaclisis, to encourage the maker attitude. Engaging people in makers’ social reality, the project also can encourage the creativity and sociability by sharing capacities and skills. However, The Attitude of Makers was more focus on the solution for current situation. It was clear that the scenario is not challenging enough to motivate a complex context of futures. We got a lot of positive feedbacks from the class. For next step, we would try to involve more bold assumptions in order to create more inspirations. As a result, the Attitude of Makers was just the beginning of our thinking progress, but it offered us a focusing point, which is the possibility of raising people’s capacity in social context. 2nd IDEA: Chat UP Chat UP For creating a challenging idea, we try to challenge ourselves. We hold the previous idea and start an imaginative discussion in the College Green of Goldsmiths. We think a relaxing and opening environment has effects to our thinking and discussion. In this opened mind discussion, we share many opportunities in futures in many areas. Many ideas relate to the effects from the development of future technology on society, such as alternative energy source, transportation, data, online community. As a result, our curiosity states on the change of relationship value; technology helps to connect far away persons, but disconnect from the person beside; losing an awareness of face-to-face relationship. For the breakthrough question, we come up with how to make people can feel aware about their relationship. However, the overwhelming overspreading internet creates a virtual world occupied numerous users’ life, not only time, but also creativities. In instances, more and more creative involved in online business, and a number of brilliant ideas are created. Because of the advertising work experiences, Ryan has a lot of case studies about those creative industries. We tried to transplant an idea which only works in internet to the physical world in order to balance the virtual world and real world in the future, and also extend the impact of creativities.
  • 8. 6 For the methodology, Perus compares a relationship value with an exchange value. The exchange value, represented in form of price, has money as a tool for objectification. Consequently, people can clearly measure its value and develop the way to use it. In contrary, the relationship also has own value and using benefits. If it has a physically representative tool, it could increase the awareness of the relationship, which should be more considered than the exchange value. For bring it to the changing process, we decide to create future scenarios. According to the Audio Tooth Implant designed by design by James Auger & Jimmy Loizeau in 2001, this project designs a realistic electronic tooth as a radical concept in personal communication. This can create a stunning relevant scenario. Therefore, we decide create the conceptual product for representing our concept. Base on the possibility of current technology, we can design the device to reveal the network of relationship as a personal data (small data). Perus, as a product designer, sees the potentials in wearable devices. Likewise, Ryan has the experiences in using wearable devices to detect how healthy of his daily activities. We design the wearable device and call it “Chat UP Chat UP”. As a result, we came out with an idea that inspired by the idea of mutual friends in social network. Showing the mutual friends to the strangers online is one of the most efficient approaches to extend users’ social network. With the purpose, we designed a wearable device which can visualise the information of mutual friends to uncover the invisible social potential in physical world. In the future, if people had unlimited social resource, it will be a huge impact on their daily life. In presentation, Perus creates a workshop to let the group imagine they are in the part of awkward scenario; (he tries to use the idea of hypnotization) in the public place, such as tube station, everyone create their new name that makes them become a stranger for others. The workshop lets them try to find the way to start discussing with strangers. As the result, they try to start with anything in common, such as tube’s schedule, time, weather or news. After the workshop he introduces our relationship is also the common thing. By our designed device, our relationship data will be visualized and can be used beneficially. This seems success to make the group see the awareness of relationship. On the other hands, we think this idea is still not challenge enough because we look at the near prospect and the outcome is based on current technology. Moreover, there are many feedbacks about privacy issue. Actually, the privacy issue is a controversial topic which becomes more serious progressively. This issue lights our curiosity to explore the solution of privacy issue which probably will happen in futures.
  • 9. 7 3rd IDEA: The futures of privacy: In our third idea, we involved in interaction design, product design, bio-hacking and etc. There was a wide range of facilitating interdisciplinary research. Based on early evidences, we came out with an idea, Neuron+ system, which is a digital device, an open platform connected with human nervous system by hypodermic implanted. It would be an approach to intensify or even create human sensation and perception. The story of Edward Snowden inspired us in the project. Edward Snowden is a former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and former contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA). And he also is the first person who made us seriously reflect on the right of digital privacy, the surveillance and internet freedom. The privacy probably will be one of the most serious issues in the future, especially in digital world. We expect there would be some approaches can support the privacy protection. With this purpose, we came out the personal data security Neuron+ system. The Sensor+ connects with your online personal data. We describe it as digital skin. It has similar features as human skin, which can protect our body from outside world and perceive the physical world. The cold, heat, touch, punch, etc. will be transformed to be bio-electric single to the brain. The Sensor+ will transform all of data to Neuron+ which connects with human nervous system. Therefore, people can have a sort of physical perception about online personal data, which will be much more sensitive ever. Like human skin, the physical sense of perception is so sensitive, therefore it allows people to distinguish between friendly contact and despiteful. Harvey Fineberg (2011), in his TED speech, claims human beings are facing neo-evolution. There is a choice offered by technology can extend human capacities. Fineberg defines it as self-directed evolution. In instance, the Neuron+ system can create an entirely new sensation and perception, not genetically but physically. In the future, every internet user will have extremely close connection with their personal data and see the data as the part of body that can sense it and keep it safe. As a result, people can have instant reflection of their digital privacy issues. We try to use the idea to create a future scenario which is about a relatively free internet environment, highly security personal data. However, does it mean personal data will be entirely safe in the future? While following understanding stakeholders by stakeholder dialogue in the future scenarios we found the reality was much more complex than our expected. Nevertheless, it is what the future scenario supposed to be. As Heron and Reason (1987) state that, “the outcome of inquiries do not have to be confined to the traditional written report, they can pioneer aesthetic presentations as informative outcomes, and to find action-oriented ways of sharing transformative outcomes.” We were not creating utopia, but some stories about humanity.

  • 12. 10 The amoeba of culture change: There was a very inspired workshop with MA Fashion students in class, called change agency workshop. During the process, we were fully engaged in changing agency in social context. Different individuals played different roles with their specific purpose. Therefore, there should be a dynamic approach to communicate with outside world. For the future scenario, we used this approach to understand the stakeholders which not only helped us to classify our stakeholders, but also offered a pointcut to build up a conversation. We defined that the understanding of change agency workshop is a sort of experience of outside system. We have to cooperate with the outside world to achieve our goals. Furthermore, the other idea offered a slight difference. The idea of Amoeba is much more about internal system. As our understanding, the idea of Amoeba represented how a society, a group or an individual changes. It is the reason why we considered it as changing internal system. For example, even there are only two people in our group; each of us has numerous characters. There are innovators, transformers, unwilling laggards, etc. It is impossible to simplify one society, one group, even one person in one character. This is because they would be changed when the scenario changes. Therefore, the change agency workshop and amoeba system construct our understanding of outside and inside system. What makes the society developing and how to motivate other participators join in the progress? However, it will be extremely complex and tangled process when people thinking the outside system, they have to reflect their internal purpose. But if we can unify individual purpose into other stakeholder’s value system, it will be extremely easy for making sense with each other. The coherence will allow the process of changing to be more efficient. This is how an amoeba moves. The amoeba moves with internal purpose and close connections of outside world. In our future scenario, we tried to use this method to develop and uncover the stakeholders in the future culture change. In the third idea, the purpose of creating hypodermic implanted devices is a solution for protect personal online data and raising the democracy on internet. The economy benefit will be a sort of assisting issue in order to support program operation. As a result, there will be a group of stakeholders, such as, internet users, programmers, doctors, media, politicians, marketing, socialist, hackers, etc. They will make the future scenario unpredictable complexity. Because, each of them are against and supporting each other. We tried to bring them in a specific context in order to visualise the reasonable view of the future.
  • 13. 11 Mapping relations between stakeholders The idea of Amoeba of culture change helps us to understand the elements of change and the change dynamic. From this idea, we can develop our project into the flow of change by analysing and choosing the relevant stakeholders, and mapping the relationship between them. The Stakeholders wheel: From our “future of privacy” project, we can plot our stakeholders in 10 different roles. The most clearly visible stakeholders who will got the directly benefit is an internet users (10), programmers (2) and doctors (3); the internet users will feel safe from using Neuron+ system to protect their personal data; the programmers have new business opportunities they can involve; and also the doctor will see the development of the new potential area in their career, as a plastic surgery doctor who develop into the beauty business. In the other ways, this project also requires some programmers (2) and doctor (3) for their profession. Also, we (1) as the inventors can achieve our purpose which we want to create the internet (9) to be the safety place for everyone, the internet user (10). Therefore, we (1) need the promotional media (4) to support this project to broaden this concept to the society. And Neuron+ system can be a new promotional strategy vice versa. In contrary, politicians (especially the American government) and the data company (5) will counter on this at first because it create the democratic phenomenon on the internet, they would be the ‘Reactionaries’ (in the Amoeba model) because now they are powerful by governing the internet users (10) data. This powerful counterforce could be failed by weighting with the demand from the population of internet users (10) which keeps rapidly increasing. Furthermore, the business strategists (6), socialists (7), and the internet security (8) would not get a direct effect, but this project could extend their professional area where they can develop new researches and strategies further.
  • 15. 13 Steps further for creating Change: The change idea has to spread to the related stakeholders to create change. In the early step, it could be broadly promoted by one-way communication, such as posters and advertise, for catching the ‘Transformer’, according to the Amoeba of culture change, who would be interested. In the step further, it needs a collective workshop to communicate this idea with all stakeholders. The workshop can inform relation between each role and allows the stakeholders to exchange their opinions. This workshop has to clearly communicate to the participants. For this project, a short movie could be the best way to communicate the future scenarios. Furthermore, the workshop could be built as the exhibition, which shows the diverse scenarios from different area of stakeholders.
  • 16. 14 What we learned from collaborative working? From the first idea to the third idea, as a team we had many long discussions and many times self-observations in order to understand ourselves and each other. It was entirely different that two people work as a team, rather than three or more. We tried to build up a dialogue in our cooperation in stand of holding and arguing with individual point of views. In a previous essay (Creative Collaboration within Dialogue), Ryan had further research about how to elevate the create collaboration by changing the way of communication. In a dialogue, “We are not play game against each other, but with each other.” (Bohm, 2004) Through the design methods, such as positioning tool, idea mapping, we motivated a dynamic flowing understanding in our team. By these tools we developed our discussion from the level of head-discussion (thinking base) to stomach-discussion (sensing base) by transforming ideas to the sensible world. It is valuable experience for each of us, because without the coherence we cannot achieve any expectation together, otherwise, it would not be a successful collaboration. Both of us had been out of individual comfort zone to involve in the other’s interesting areas. We believe this kind of collaboration has great potential to bring out widespread ideas which is beyond each individual possibility, because it is very necessary for the complex future scenarios. Furthermore, all of these understandings are not just our blueprinting. The above-mentioned report about the process of developing ideas is the best evidence for our collaboration. Though this course, our team changed our ideas three times. We saw it as a development of our views and understandings in futures scenarios method from the beginning. From the first class, we though the concept of futures scenarios is to design something for a possible future. By this project, we keep developing our understanding about futures scenarios through presenting ideas and getting feedbacks. Finally, we found the future scenario is a fascinating idealistic space where some critical problematic ideas could drag to, also it is necessary to be possible. To challenge others, we have to challenge ourselves to step to the unknown area and explore it.
