  • MUSIC MAGAZINE EVALUATION BY: Monique Jones
  • Q: In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
    • My magazine is a R&B music magazine and it uses some of the forms and conventions that other magazines uses through:
    • The layout which is similar to successful music magazines such as Vibes, The Source and kings magazines because of the following factors:
    • The picture on my front cover takes up most of the page and is focusing solely on the model, this is the same with other music magazines, they focus on one band/singer and then feature them on many pages Like most read media products.
    • I used sub headings to advertise features in my magazine, they all target my audience bringing attention to my magazine because they promote things. That interest my audience.
    • My magazine rejects the from and conventions of popular R&B magazine by having multiple images on the contents page rather than just having one because in making my magazine I thought that even if it conform to popular form and conventions it should have an element that makes it unique hence the reason for using multiple images on my contents page.
    • However I think that my magazines conforms more than reject the forms and conventions of other magazine. I think that even if a magazine might belong to a particular genre it has to form its own unique identity in order to stand out thus me having many images on my contents is just a way of making my magazine stand out
  • Second draft of the elements belonging to my magazine After completing my second draft of my magazine I thought it would have been my last but it wasn’t. By looking at my second draft one would realise that is it does have similar forms and conventions to other R&B magazines. However even if that is so all the elements belonging to my magazine doesn't connect with each other to show that they all belong to the same magazine. One of the critic I got from the recipients of my magazine is that the cover looks very masculine and grimy, while the rest of my magazine looked very feminine and calming. Also the colours used in the magazine was not connecting, in that the front cover is red, black and white while the double page spread is purple, with a splash of blue and sparkles. Thus it was concluded that all the elements portrayed something different while, they all should be portraying the same or similar things in order to fully connect with the audience.
  • Final draft for my magazine From the second draft of my magazine there has been many major changes. I changed the color scheme on all the elements of my magazine and I made sure that the colors connected throughout the whole magazine. Each element has a touch of purple, red, white, yellow and black to show that they all belong to the same magazine and not each one standing by themselves as in my second draft. I also changed the model on my front cover to a woman because in my second draft the front cover stood alone because it was to masculine and grimy while the contents page and double page spread looked very famine and calming. The magazine now portrays a collective idea. The magazine is still a R&B magazine but with a twist in that this edition is to honor the women in the music business and their journey to stardom. It still targets the same audience 16 -25 male/females nothing changes, it looks feminine because it a edition dedicated to women. Many magazine do similar promotions

  • Bar code showing issue number and price The use of Sub-headings to advertise features in the magazine The focus is solely on the model being shown on the cover, who is the biggest feature on the cover. Introduces the model on the front cover and tells something about them
  • Advertises models who would be featured in the magazine List of features in the magazine It has sub-headings under each main heading giving a preview of what it’s all about
  • The articles are in columns There is an image taking up half the page Introductory statement or selling line to the article which is meant to inform the readers what the article is all about also to get them interested and draw there attention
  • Q: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
    • My magazine represents the R&B social group between the ages of 15-25. some of the way in which my magazine represent that social group ar e:
    • The language used throughout my media product is not too formal. The intended audience of my magazine is young people so when they read the articles in the magazine they would be able to identify themselves with what is being said. The magazine has slangs which some of the teens might use thus it would give them a sense that they’re being represented in the media world. Overall I think my magazine has the right mix to represent both the teens and those who are a little older.
    • The model featured throughout the magazine identifies with my social group, the way the models dress and their gestures maybe similar to how my social group portray themselves.
    • The fonts used in the magazine in bolded and is in bright colors which would attract the readers attention.
    • The articles in my magazine contains the latest gossips that my target readers are keen to know about thus making them more interested in the magazine.
  • Q: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
    • The media institution that might distribute my R&B music magazine would be ‘The Nielson Company’ which distributes existing magazines for example ‘Rap Up’ and ‘Billboard’. These magazines are such a big success thus the Nielson company would be the right media institution to distribute my media product as they could use the same tactics as they used with Rap Up and Billboard to make my magazine a big success as the magazine previous mentioned .
    • Another media intuition I would use is Vibe. As “Vibe” is a really reliable source to compare my work with as they are both R&B specific magazines. Therefore, vibe is a media institution that would be good to market my music magazine seeing that they are R&B specialists. The Vibe company not only produces magazine but televisions shows as well [vibe TV] and has a number of vibe branded properties such as V-Sessions, Vibe Mobile and Vibe books. These have all been published in newspapers and been promoted all around the world. This relates back to my magazine because my magazine has similar forms and conventions used in this magazine.
  • Other media institution that might be a distributor for my magazine are:
    • To advertise my magazine I would create a website, so that my reader would be able to access my magazine easily. Also I will give my intended audience the opportunity to subscribe to the magazine which will have a subscription fee around £1.99 per month. Thus my magazine would be able distributed electronically.
    • I could use social networking sites such as twitter, facebook and MySpace to advertise my magazine because my target audience belong to the age group which uses social networking sites so it would be an effective way of advertising and maybe distribution. Also social networking sites are the recent trends used my major magazines to advertise and distribute there product.
  • Audience feedback questionnaire It is always important as a produce of a magazine to find out your audience opinion about your magazine. Thus I have created this small questionnaire to find out what my audience think about and what they though I could improve on .
  • Audience feedback
    • Before the production of my magazine I carried out a market research questionnaire to get a feel of who the audience of my magazine would be, what they are interests and how much they are willing to pay for a music magazine. From the questionnaire I found out theses things:
    • My focus audience would be young people between 15 – 25
    • The music they are more interested in is R&B, thus the theme of my magazine.
    • The cost at which I would sell my magazine in order to make it affordable to my audience.
    • After the final product of my magazine was finished I asked my target audience their opinion on how my magazine addressed their entertainment needs and if it were something they would purchase. Their response was:
    • Just by looking at the magazine I could tell what it is and what is it trying to represent.
    • The color scheme of the magazine is very attractive, the language and the picture on the front cover is something that they themselves could identify with.
    • The magazine is appealing and if it were for sale I would purchase a copy.
  • Who would be the audience for your media product?
    • My audience would be young people between the ages of 15 – 25.
    • The magazine is not aimed at any gender in specific but tries to incorporate things that would interest both genders. The colors used on the magazine is quit universal also the articles in the magazine would tend to the needs of both gender, there’s gossip for females and info on music and gigs for males.
    • The audience for my magazine would be interested in R&B music.
    • My magazine may look feminine but the target audience doesn’t change. It just that this edition of my magazine is dedicated to women I thought it would be a good idea because the production of my magazine was around international women’s day
  • How did you attract/address your audience?
    • By using a consistent colour throughout my magazine which is purple, yellow, white and black, I chose these colours after researching similar music magazines to mine and found that they were colour widely used.
    • The model featured on the magazine is attractive and has swag, thus appealing to my audiences needs. The colour scheme of my magazine stands out and would be able to attract my audiences attention.
    • The language used throughout the magazine appeals to my target audience as it isn’t too formal or informal making it just the right mix for the age I am targeting, using the right mode of address.

  • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
    • I have learned that with technology one can do great things. Also in the production of a good magazine technology must be used in order to make the magazine what you want it to be.
    • Throughout the making of my magazine I have used Adobe Photoshop to assist me along the way and this is what I’ve learnt:
    • To crop out and image from a photo and make them different length and sizes.
    • I learnt how to use different layers which allowed me to overlap text and photos.
    • I learnt how to create fancy design with the use of the brushes.
    • I also learnt how to use different texts/sizes and colours to make the font cover stand out on the magazine also how to add different effects to it such as: inner glow and drop shadow.
    • How to lasso around photos, this allows you to cut out around specific areas, in my case I used it to completely get rid of the background so only the model would be put on the plain white background
  • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
    • Lots of research is needed in finding the correct target group and finding ways in which you can attract them to your magazine .
    • There shouldn’t be too much images on the on the front cover, however when using images it should represents your audiences and be relevant to the magazine.
    • I learnt how the layout has to be, having the master head at the top of the page in big bold writing.
    • You need to have your articles in columns that don’t consist of too much right to put the reader off.
    • The colours being used also needs to be chosen correctly to ensure they will appeal to your target audience and they should remain consistent throughout the whole magazine.
    • It takes a lot of time and dedication to accomplish a fairly successful finish product.
  • Preliminary task Second draft In this production of a school magazine there was a lot of different colors used and I didn’t stick to two or more colors but used a wide variety . In this production of my music magazine I tried to stick to one color scheme rather than using a variety of different colors Final draft
  • Conclusion
    • Overall , I think that all the skills I have learnt such as learning how to operate new computer programs and developing my thinking ability, will be useful to me not only in media but throughout all other subject area seeing that the use of technology and thinking skills is always something that needed.
    • I have also learnt a lot about time management and how it is important in accomplishing a project and getting the necessary work done on time.
