In the next version of MongoDB the storage layer will be re-architected to improve scalability, maintainability and performance. Version 2.8 will include an API to allow plugging in alternate storage engines. This will include both how individual records are stored as well as the structure of indexes. Mathias Stearn, MongoDB Server Engineer, will walk through writing a simple implementation using our unit test mock that he wrote as an example. You'll walk away knowing the necessary components for plugging in your own storage engine and how they interact with each other and the rest of MongoDB.
