Optical devices operate using a laser beam. The laser reads from and writes to the disk. This disk is made up of polycarbonate plastic coated with a thin layer of reflective material. The reflective material is then etched into by the laser; this causes microscopic pits to form on the surface.
Solid state backing storage is a silicon chip which consists of a grid of columns and rows of cells. Each cell comprises of 2 transistors separated by a thin oxide layer. They have no moving parts
