“SESENTA Y PIQUITO” PROJECT A project created and sponsored by the Municipality of Quito“Sesenta y Piquito” isdirected to seniors who haveserious difficulties inaccessing to health services.It is looking for to improvetheir lifestyle (before nottaken in consideration)through accessing torecreational spaces andsports to provide an activeand healthy life.
The recreational spaces are called “Sesenta y PiquitoPoints”; they are public places (community houses orthe Community Development Centers CDCs) wherethey have access to different activities, such as: dancetherapy, special exercises, handicrafts, organicagriculture, health workshops, among others.It is important to stand out thatthis Project pretends thatseniors life must be lived withlove, care and respect, and atthe same time being productive.The Sesenta y Piquito Pointshave become a place ofencounter for seniors.
This Project supports:•To the person and his/herfamily: looking for satisfyingfundamental human needs ofsubsistence, protection and affection.•To the socialization and communityintegration: developingentrepreneurships, active participationin the society, spare time and creativity.•To the integral social inclusion:promoting the identity, freedom, andalso personal and communityimportance.
For such purpose, differentmunicipal and state institutionshave organized and articulatedthemselves regarding toprovide direct and consolidateservices to seniors and disablepeople.“Concertation intra and interinstitutional”.The project has also strategic alliances with: Vice-President Bureau, Minister ofSocial and Economic Inclusion, Concejo Nacional de Discapacidades (DisableAffairs Bureau) and several universities.
The Project “Sesenta y Piquito” has established some guiding themes for the metropolitan intervention with seniors: 1. Creating Public Policies; 2. Providing well-timed, quality and gentle services; 3. Promoting rights and building citizenship of senior people. 4. Restitution of Rights.The most relevant aspect of this Project is the socio-organizationalempowerment!!.... the biggest municipal investment is in this process.
