  • What is the National Curriculum?
    • “ The National Curriculum is a framework used by all maintained schools to ensure that teaching and learning is balanced and consistent”.
    • It sets out core subjects, targets, knowledge required amongst other things.

  • Content of the National Curriculum?
    • The National Curriculum sets out:
    • The subjects taught (core, foundation)
    • The knowledge, skills and understanding required in each subject
    • Standards or attainment targets in each subject that teachers can use to measure progress and plan future learning
    • How progress is assessed and reported
  • Why Reform?
    • To give recognition for less academic and technical pupils in offering a solid grounding for their future
    • Keep up to date and improve
    • Allows mixture of theory and practical experience
  • Aim of Reform
    • Make it easier for young people to make effective learning choices
    • Help employers and higher education providers understand the qualifications that young people have gained.
    • By 2013 the majority of young people will access qualifications through one of the four nationally available qualification routes:
      • GCSE & A levels
      • Diplomas
      • Apprenticeships
      • Foundation learning
  • Diplomas
    • New qualification that combines theoretical study with practical experience
    • Different ways of learning – e.g. Learning by doing
    • By 2013 there will be 17 Diplomas as a route into higher education and the world of work.
    • Available at 3 levels :
      • Foundation
      • Higher
      • Advanced
  • Apprenticeship
    • Accredited qualifications through employers
    • Combines paid work with on the job training
    • Wage subsides for small businesses
    • Every suitably qualified young person should have the opportunity to an apprenticeship place by 2013
  • Foundation learning
    • National suite of learning for 14-19s at Entry Level or Level 1
    • The main aim is to support progression at the learner's own pace
    • Learners develop a full range of skills in a coherent manner – use personalised learning
    • Progress to higher level qualification
  • Effects of the Reform
    • Value of Diploma
    • Communication between schools, higher education and employers
    • Increased workload on teachers
    • Better qualified UK workforce with different skills for the future
    • With more interaction between educational institutions and employers, better connections and partnerships can be created
