    • Your F-1 Orientation schedule is attached to your class schedule.
    • Please review your schedule to see when your orientation is.

  • SAL Online Bookstore
    • SAL students use the SAL Online Bookstore to order their textbooks.
    • We are going to show you how to buy your books using the SAL Online Bookstore.

  • Class Information
  • Classroom Location Click on the map!
  • Electives
    • Are the classes that YOU choose.
    • Electives are ONE time per week.
    • Tuesday or Thursday from 10:30-12:20 or 1-3pm.
    • You will each have TWO (2) elective classes.
    • You must make sure that you select 2 electives that are at different times.
    • There will be 6 Tuesday electives and 5 Thursday electives in Fall Session 2.

  • Grading for Electives
    • Each elective class has a different purpose for your English language development.
    • Some are academic, some are TOEFL specific, some are fun.
    • Read the greensheet for each elective that you take carefully and follow the guidelines to earn a good grade in these courses.
  • Absences for Electives
    • 2 absences will lower your grade.
    • 3 or more absences: you will receive an F
    • F grades = no SAL certificate
    • Select your electives carefully

  • Online Elective Sign-ups
    • You will sign-up for your electives ONLINE!
    • You will sign-up at the end of this orientation session.
  • Schedules
    • You will receive a handout with your elective schedule on it in your class on Monday.
    • On this schedule you will see: both electives that you signed-up for with the room number and required text information.
    • Classes will begin Tuesday.
  • Wait-List
    • If you want a class that is “full,” you can add your name to the “wait-list” (online).
    • If you are on the wait-list and a seat opens up in the class, we will notify you and add you to the class if you still want it.
    • Wait-listed classed can only be added to your schedule by the office. This cannot be done online.
  • Step 1: Elective Options
    • Go to http://student.moodle.sjsu.edu / to find the list of classes that are open to your level.
    • Make yourself a numbered list, for example:
      • Choice 1: TOEFL Listening
      • Choice 2: Blogging in English
      • Choice 3: Grammar Workshop
      • Choice 4: Slang and Idioms
  • Step 2: Bring with you
    • You will need the following information with you when you sign-up:
        • Your student ID number
        • Your SAL PIN number

    • Look for the Electives sign-up instructional P owerPoint on the first page of the Moodle.
    • Follow the steps from the instructional PPT as you sign-up

  • Grades and Attendance
    • Grades and attendance very important in our academic programs.
    • F-1 Student Visa status –
    • Mandatory attendance to all classes.
    • If you receive an “F” in any core course or elective course – you will not receive a “SAL Certificate of Completion” and you will be placed in Probation at the end of the term.
  • Applying to Community College
    • Visit the SAL website to learn about our TOEFL Waiver Program with local community colleges.
