  • mobileyouthreport.com http://www.mobileyouthreport.com/apple-iphone-carplay/ Freddie Apple brings the iPhone to your car dashboard with CarPlay Apple introduced CarPlay this past week when it started offering its latest iOS update to iPad and iPhone owners. CarPlay allows an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) to be controlled by a compatible car’s touchscreen, knobs and buttons. Car drivers safely push a button placed in an easily accessible spot on their cars to launch Siri, then make calls, use maps, listen to music and access messages hands-free. A screen built-in to the dashboard can show turn-by-turn directions.
  • Pairing an iPhone with a car is as easy as plugging the Lightning cable into the phone and connecting the other end to the car’s USB port. When a car detects that an iPhone has been connected, it will automatically open CarPlay. Cars from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo already have CarPlay as an option for customers, while manufacturers such as BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Jaguar, KIA, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota will all launch the feature in the future. Use the software to engage with customers While Apple is well known for its hardware design and innovation, the company is aware that it needs to leverage its software (iOS) to engage with customers and stay relevant. Making a better camera, higher resolution display or better speakers won’t differentiate it from the competition. These are features others could easily emulate in time. But taking the software experience to everyday spaces like the car makes Apple a highly relevant brand delivering tangible benefits to people’s everyday lives. Youth are already taking their smartphones to bed with them. Now they can take use it in their cars without the fear of distracted driving. The one thing I found surprising is that Apple chose to call the service CarPlay instead of iCar. You can find more on how smartphone brands can engage with young customers in the Youth Engagement Toolkit for Smartphone Brands.
