21. 21. Rays
Most rays live on the sea floor.
They feed on clams, oysters, shellfish, and fish.
Other rays live in coastal waters.
Manta rays feed on small sea animals and plankton.
Rays have a boneless skeleton.
Rays have gill slits like a shark.
Most rays have a flat, disk-like body.
22. 22. Whales are large, intelligent, mammals.
They breathe through blowholes and have lungs, unlike fish that have gills.
Whales communicate by singing.
They are one of the only mammals that live their entire lives in the water.
Whales
23. 23. Dolphins
Dolphins are related to whales.
They travel through the ocean in groups.
They can jump 20 feet out of the water.
They are very protective of each other, and take care of one another.
Dolphins are very intelligent and are studied by many scientists.
24. 24. Squid can change color and shoot out ink.
Squid swim like octopus’s do.
They have long pointy bodies, and ten arms.
They also have two hearts instead of one.
Squid eat fish, shrimp, crabs, and lobsters.
They hunt in packs.
Squid can grow to be about 60 feet long.
Squid
25. 25. The sea horse is the slowest swimming fish in the world.
They have a tiny head that looks like a horse.
They can grow to about five inches long, and they have a long tail which they use to hold onto seaweed.
The sea horse has though, bony, skin that changes color to match its surroundings.
Seahorses
26. 26. Sharks are fish.
A shark’s skin is very tough.
Some sharks are dangerous to men.
The great white shark is a dangerous shark.
They are big; they can be from 17 to 25 feet long.
The great white can be gray, brown, blue, or black on its back but their sides and their bellies are white.
Sharks
27. 27. The octopus has a long head with two eyes.
They have very good eyesight.
An octopus has eight arms called tentacles.
On each tentacle there are many suction cups which are used to catch food.
Their enemies are fish, whales, eels, and sharks.
They change color to hide from danger, and they also squirt out a dark ink to confuse their enemies.
Octopus
28. 28. Seals belong to the family of mammals.
They’re called Pinnipeds, which means fin foot.
Their fins are flattened feet.
Seals live in warm and cold climates.
They spend their time both in water and on land.
Seals have enemies like sharks and killer whales.
Seals
29. 29. Jellyfish are umbrella shaped creatures with hanging tentacles.
Their bodies are made up of water.
In their tentacles there are tiny tubes which contain poison.
When touched, the tubes explode and shoot out poison.
They are nicknamed sea wasps.
Some jellyfish are no bigger than a pin head, and some are giants.
Jellyfish
30. 30. Starfish
Starfish have long arms that look like a star.
They have no brain or eyes but they use their tentacles for tasting and touching.
In the center of the starfish is its mouth and stomach.
To eat, a starfish’s stomach will come out and engulf its prey.
If a starfish loses any tentacles it can regrow it.
