About the City
Located in Hennepin County just eight miles west of Minneapolis, Minnetonka is a fully developed suburban community of 51,301 residents, making it the 14th largest city in Minnesota.
Minnetonka is proud of its reputation as a city that preserves it natural resources –residents can enjoy 42community parks, more than 40 miles of trails and more than 1,000 acres of public open space, as well as natural scenery that includes mature trees, wetlands and prairies.

History
The land that would come to be known as Minnetonka was sacred ground for Native Americans. The dense woods and open prairies made for good hunting, while Lake Minnetonka provided excellent fishing.
The Dakotah Sioux and Ojibway Chippewa would cross through Minnetonka as they traveled between Shakopee and Mille Lacs—a major Indian trail through Minnetonka crossed Minnehaha Creek just below the rapids at present-day Minnetonka Mills, then ran along the present Baker and Plymouth roads.

In 1851, Indian tribes signed an agreement allowing settlement of lands west of Fort Snelling, and by 1852, Minnetonka’s first settlement was established at the current Minnetonka Mills site.
As Minnetonka was settled, several small, distinct commercial areas, all two to three miles apart with farms and homes in between, developed over the years. Those areas came to be known as Minnetonka Mills, Glen Lake, Groveland, and Oak Knoll.

Economy
The city is home to Cargill, the country's largest privately owned company and United Healthcare, the state's largest publicly owned company.
According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $78,840, and the median income for a family was $101,793.

Minnetonka Lake is perhaps one of the major reasons why Minnesota particularly Minnetonka is an attractive relocation site for those planning an executive relocation, professional relocation, corporate relocation and even employee relocation.
Residents and those planning to relocate to Minnetonka should however take note that the city cannot refuse to divulge any information pertaining to the names and addresses of Minnetonka residents despite requests of confidentiality from the said residents themselves as such is considered part of public information.

One thing that should encourage residential and employee relocation is the Homestead policy of the local government which allows residents to apply for homestead for properties they are occupying as primary residence.
However, a property cannot be automatically classified as homestead property as the owner has to apply for homestead first.
The following are qualified to apply for homestead: 1. Residents who are occupying their property as their primary residence 2. Relatives who are occupying the properties of qualified owners (subject to a special application to be made by both the property owner and occupant relative)

So why should you apply for a homestead? • Owners of homestead properties can avail of lower property tax • A property must be classified as a homestead as a pre-requisite for other special property taxes granted by the local government
Homeowners who want to apply for homestead should make sure they get a copy of their Warranty Deed and Certificate of Real Estate Value. However, they can also present the following documents: • Contract of Deed • Quit Claim • Trustee’s Deed • Personal Representative’s Deed
To apply for homestead, you can either visit City Hall to submit the pertinent documents or you can send your application by mail.

Public schools
The city of Minnetonka is covered by three independent school districts. The Hopkins School District, which encompasses the central and eastern part of Minnetonka; the Minnetonka School District, in the western part of city south of Lake Minnetonka; and the Wayzata School District, which covers an area along the northern boundary of the city.

Private schools
There are three private and parochial schools within Minnetonka's city limits:
Accell Academy, an accredited private college preparatory school serving grades K-12
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, preschool through eighth grade

Public Libraries
The Hennepin County Library has its headquarters in the Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka. In addition the system operates the Minnetonka Library.

Attractions
The Hopkins-Minnetonka Joint Recreation Services Department offers recreation programming for the approximately 70,000 residents of Hopkins and Minnetonka, providing programs and leagues for about 45 activities at more than 50 sites.
The Joint Recreation division also manages outdoor skating rinks at 14 sites and playground programs throughout both Hopkins and Minnetonka.

Gray’s Bay Public Access, located at the corner of County Road 101 South and Gray’s Bay Boulevard, has the amenities which are the parking lot with 112 vehicle-with-trailer spaces and 21 vehicle-only spaces, three launch lanes and 29 permanent boat slips.
This bay provides residents an open bay to enjoy their boats and feel the open lake breeze.

City programs such as public skating, skating lessons, and adult hockey are offered through the Minnetonka Ice Arena.
Minnetonka also ha 3 parks for its residents to enjoy including ,the Lone Lake Park, Gro-Tonka, and Shady Oak, which has a lot of amenities to choose from.
