  • 2. Lake Minnetonka
    • Lake Minnetonka is a 14,528-acre (59 km2) lake in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Throughout its recorded history, the lake has been a resort destination.
    • 3. The lake is an irregular shape with numerous bays and islands which make up about 125 milesof shoreline.
  • Location
Lake Minnetonka is located west-southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul. Almost the entire lake is located in Hennepin County.
However, its southernmost extension, at Smithtown Bay, reaches into the city of Victoria, in northeastern Carver County.
  • 4. History
The history of Lake Minnetonka is traced back 11,000 years ago where the area of what is now a lake were large blocks of ice that were left in the wake of the retreating glacier. These blocks of ice which were buried in soil and rock, eventually melted to form Lake Minnetonka.
The first known people of European descent known to have visited the lake were two teenaged boys from Fort St. Anthony (later called Fort Snelling), Joe Brown and Will Snelling.
In 1852, the lake was given its name by Minnesota's territorial governor Alexander Ramsey. He had been told that American Indians in the area used a phrase sounding like minn-ni-tanka, meaning “big water,” to refer to the lake.
  • 5. Recreation
Lake Minnetonka is a popular fishing location. Its game species include yellow perch, sunfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and muskellunge (or muskies).
Lake Minnetonka is also popular for walking, picnicking, camping, boating, lake cruises and sailing.
  • 6. Recreation
There is also an annual marathon at Lake Minnetonka which is called the Annual Wells Fargo Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon. The marathon goes across Lake Minnetonka and is surely one of the events awaited by residents.
And if running isn’t your thing, Lake Minnetonka also offers an array of cruises to choose from, they offer a completely romantic view while enjoying your lavish dinner.
