  • Welcome everyone. My name is John Hamerlinck. I am associate director at Minnesota Campus Compact. It is a pleasure and an honor to have you all with us today for this exploration of the issues related to integrating service-learning into online education.
  • Obviously folks who might have thought that online courses were a fad or a marginalized continuing education phenomenon were wrong. What we have not seen during this tremendous growth period Is a co-evolution with civically engaged teaching and learning. That would suggest that there are some real opportunities.
  • We know (or have a good idea) what constitutes good practice in online education Cal State, Chico ROI Baseline, Effective, and Exemplary indicators for all six categories
  • We know this isn’t easy (what is?), but we do know some important things . . .
  • It is now my pleasure to introduce Jean Strait. Editor of “The Future of Service-Learning” with Marybeth Lima Author of one of the first articles ever on the practice of e-service Jean . . . (Switch to Jean’s desktop)
  • Proposed: Center for Digital Civic Engagement Who would like to be part of an ongoing conversation ? Who is willing to share knowledge, tools and resources?

  • http://sloanconsortium.org/publications/survey/class_differences Sixty-three percent of all reporting institutions said that online learning was a critical part of their institution’s long term strategy . Over 5.6 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2009 term; an increase of nearly one million students over the number reported the previous year. The twenty-one percent growth rate for online enrollments far exceeds the less than two percent growth of the overall higher education student population. Nearly thirty percent of higher education students now take at least one course online.
