Some Sobering Statistics from WHO 13 !   Deaths in Child birth:> 500,000 women/year, one every minute, •  Almost exclusively in the developing world, •  Almost always preventable !   ~11 million children under the age of 5 die /year : •  Malnutrition •  preventable diseases !   12% of deaths are related to neurological disorders !   50 million people of all ages worldwide suffer from epilepsy •  ~90% of the people with epilepsy are found in developing regions October 8, 10

Did you know that….. 14 !   Even today, people with epilepsy: •  Reduced access to health and life insurance/drivers Licesnse •  Barriers to enter particular occupations !   In China and India: •  Epilepsy is commonly a reason for prohibiting/annulling marriages !   In the United Kingdom: •  Law forbidding people with epilepsy to marry was repealed only in 1970 !   In the United States, until the 1970s, it was legal to deny people with seizures access to: •  Restaurants, theatres, recreational centres and other public buildings
