  1. 1. Grade 9 Zoo Project: Unit 1 Biological Diversity Mr. Sawchuk and Ms. Adams Springbank Community High School

What You Will Produce: <ul><li>1) Scale Model of a Zoo Enclosure with an Information Board, Slide Show or Video </li></ul><ul><li>2) Prototype: Google Sketchup (still deciding on whether to include this step or not) </li></ul><ul><li>3) You will need to choose: Type of animal, which dictates the form of enclosure </li></ul>

What You Will Learn By Doing This Project: <ul><li>Unit 1: Biological Diversity: </li></ul><ul><li>Core Concepts: </li></ul><ul><li>- biological diversity; inheritance; diversity within species; habitat diversity; niches; populations; chromosomes, genes and DNA; natural and artificial selection of genetic characteristics </li></ul>
  4. 4. The Courses Involved in the Project: <ul><li>Science (Biological Diversity and Principles of Electricity) </li></ul><ul><li>Math (Scale – shrinking and enlarging, …) </li></ul>

The Steps that Will Be Involved in the Project: <ul><li>You will be provided with a series of questions for each of the sections in the unit which will guide you in producing your final project </li></ul><ul><li>Along the Way You Will Be Assessed On: </li></ul><ul><li>pictures of project model during development (if being completed at home) </li></ul><ul><li>board/slide show/Prezi along the way </li></ul><ul><li>completion of information gathering form from zoo visit </li></ul><ul><li>planning worksheet </li></ul>

Technology Involved <ul><li>You may use any of the following methods to present your animal’s information: </li></ul><ul><li>A Poster </li></ul><ul><li>A Slide Show </li></ul><ul><li>A Video </li></ul><ul><li>A Prezi Presentation </li></ul><ul><li>You may submit other options for consideration </li></ul><ul><li>Some of you may use power tools (with parental assistance) to build your model) </li></ul>
  7. 7. Community Involvement <ul><li>You will be assisted and assessed in your project development by: </li></ul><ul><li>Me (Mr. Sawchuk) </li></ul><ul><li>Your classmates </li></ul><ul><li>Mr. Gage, an architect from Gibbs Gage Architects </li></ul><ul><li>Employees of the Calgary Zoo </li></ul>
  8. 8. Project Timeline <ul><li>The Project will be completed over a 3 Week period. </li></ul><ul><li>After 2 weeks, your project will be assessed by myself and a member of the community. You will then be allowed one more week to make improvements to your project before the final presentation to the class. </li></ul><ul><li>At the end of 3 weeks, you will present your final product to the class. </li></ul><ul><li>Near the end of the semester you will be involved in a school-wide event to present your projects to your peers, family and school staff </li></ul><ul><li>Your project will be assessed on the following pieces: </li></ul><ul><li>The scale model – appropriateness of features for animal’s needs and the quality of math used to build the model. </li></ul><ul><li>The quality of information presentation. </li></ul><ul><li>The presentation of materials to your class. </li></ul><ul><li>Your level and quality of participation in project development with your group. </li></ul>

What you will be expected to submit: <ul><li>Zoo Visit Form (completion marks) </li></ul><ul><li>Planning Worksheet (completion – quality of details will be considered) </li></ul><ul><li>Rough Drafts of Project (will receive a grade, but grade will be omitted when final product is presented, after improvements have been made) </li></ul><ul><li>Final Model and Information Piece </li></ul>
