Before the Passover festival, Jesus knew thatthe time had come for Him to leave this worldand go back to the Father. Jesus loved His ownwho were in the world, and He loved them tothe end. While supper was taking place, thedevil had already put the idea of betrayingJesus into the mind of Judas, son of SimonIscariot. The Foot Washing—John 13:1-17Page 1 of 5
The Father had put everything in Jesus’ control.Jesus knew that. He also knew that He hadcome from God and was going back to God. SoHe got up from the table, removed His outerclothes, took a towel, and tied it around Hiswaist. Then He poured water into a basin andbegan to wash the disciples’ feet and dry themwith the towel that He had tied around Hiswaist.Page 2 of 5
When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter askedHim, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"Jesus answered Peter, "You don’t know nowwhat I’m doing. You will understand later."Peter told Jesus, "You will never wash my feet."Jesus replied to Peter, "If I don’t wash you, youdon’t belong to Me." Simon Peter said to Jesus,"Lord, don’t wash only my feet. Wash my handsand my head too!"Page 3 of 5
Jesus told Peter, "People who have washed arecompletely clean. They need to have only theirfeet washed. All of you, except for one, areclean." (Jesus knew who was going to betrayHim. That’s why He said, "All of you, except forone, are clean.") After Jesus had washed theirfeet and put on His outer clothes, He took Hisplace at the table again.Page 4 of 5
Then He asked His disciples, "Do youunderstand what I’ve done for you? You call Meteacher and Lord, and you’re right becausethat’s what I am. So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you must wash eachother’s feet. I’ve given you an example that youshould follow. I can guarantee this truth: Slavesare not superior to their owners, andmessengers are not superior to the people whosend them. If you understand all of this, youare blessed whenever you follow My example.Page 5 of 5
"Im not talking about all of you. I know thepeople Ive chosen to be apostles. However,Ive made My choice so that Scripture will cometrue. It says, The one who eats My bread hasturned against Me. Im telling you now beforeit happens. Then, when it happens, you willbelieve that I am the One. I can guarantee thistruth: Whoever accepts Me accepts the Onewho sent Me."The Meal—John 13:18-27Page 1 of 4
After saying this, Jesus was deeply troubled. Hedeclared, "I can guarantee this truth: One ofyou is going to betray Me!" The disciples beganlooking at each other and wondering which oneof them Jesus meant. One disciple, the onewhom Jesus loved, was near Him at the table.Simon Peter motioned to that disciple and said,"Ask Jesus whom Hes talking about!"Page 2 of 4
Leaning close to Jesus, that disciple asked,"Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered, "Hes theone to whom I will give this piece of bread afterIve dipped it in the sauce." So Jesus dipped thebread and gave it to Judas, son of SimonIscariot. Then, after Judas took the piece ofbread, Satan entered him. So Jesus told him,"Hurry! Do what you have to do."Page 3 of 4
When Judas was gone, Jesus said, "The Son ofMan is now glorified, and because of Him Godis glorified. If God is glorified because of theSon of Man, God will glorify the Son of Manbecause of Himself, and He will glorify the Sonof Man at once." Jesus said, "Dear children, Iwill still be with you for a little while. Im tellingyou what I told the Jews. You will look for Me,but you cant go where Im going."The Command—John 13:31-38Page 1 of 3
"Im giving you a new commandment: Loveeach other in the same way that I have lovedyou. Everyone will know that you are Mydisciples because of your love for each other."Simon Peter asked Him, "Lord, where are Yougoing?" Jesus answered him, "You cant followMe now to the place where Im going. However, you will follow Me later."Page 2 of 3
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, why cant I followYou now? Ill give my life for You.” Jesus replied,“Will you give your life for Me? I can guaranteethis truth: No rooster will crow until you saythree times that you dont know Me.”P Here end the readings of the Gospel.C Praise to You, O Christ.Page 3 of 3

PSALM 22My God, my God, why have Youabandoned me? Why are You so far awayfrom helping me, so far away from thewords of my groaning? My God, I cry out by day, but You donot answer—also at night, but I find norest.
Yet, You are holy, enthroned on thepraises of Israel. Our ancestors trusted You. Theytrusted, and You rescued them.
They cried to You and were saved. They trustedYou and were never disappointed.Yet, I am a worm and not a man. I amscorned by humanity and despised bypeople.
All who see Me make fun of Me. Insults pourfrom their mouths. They shake their heads andsay,“Put Yourself in the LORD’S hands. Let theLORD save Him! Let God rescue Him since Heis pleased with Him!”
Indeed, You are the One who brought Me outof the womb, the One who made Me feel safeat My mother’s breasts.I was placed in Your care from birth. FromMy mother’s womb You have been My God.
Do not be so far away from Me. Trouble isnear, and there is no one to help. Many bulls have surrounded Me. Strongbulls from Bashan have encircled me.
They have opened their mouths to attack melike ferocious, roaring lions.I am poured out like water, and all my bonesare out of joint. My heart is like wax. It hasmelted within Me.
My strength is dried up like pieces of brokenpottery. My tongue sticks to the roof of Mymouth. You lay Me down in the dust of death.Dogs have surrounded Me. A mob hasencircled Me. They have pierced My handsand feet.
I can count all My bones. People stare. Theygloat over Me.They divide My clothes among themselves. They throw dice for My clothing.
Do not be so far away, O LORD. Come quicklyto help Me, O my strength.Rescue My soul from the sword, My life fromvicious dogs.
Save Me from the mouth of the lion and fromthe horns of wild oxen. You have answeredMe.I will tell My people about Your Name. I willpraise You within the congregation.
All who fear the LORD, praise Him! All youdescendants of Jacob, glorify Him! Stand inawe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. The LORD has not despised or beendisgusted with the plight of the oppressedOne. He has not hidden His face from thatperson.
The LORD heard when that oppressed personcried out to Him for help.My praise comes from You while I am amongthose assembled for worship. I will fulfill Myvows in the presence of those who fear theLORD.
Oppressed people will eat until they are full. Those who look to the LORD will praise Him.May You live forever. All the ends of the earth will remember andreturn to the LORD. All the families from allthe nations will worship You
Because the kingdom belongs to the LORD andHe rules the nations. All prosperous people on earth will eat andworship. All those who go down to the dustwill kneel in front of Him, even those whoare barely alive.
There will be descendants who serve Him, ageneration that will be told about the Lord. They will tell people yet to be born aboutHis righteousness—that He has finished it.
At the conclusion of the Stripping of the Altar, all leave in silence
