Running the torch Running the torch Presentation Transcript

  • Running The Torch: Essential Requirements For Fired-up Disciples 2 Timothy 2:1-7 October 23, 2011 Pastor Stewart Brown
  • To become a FIRED-UP DISCIPLE for Jesus, I must be strong in God’s grace (2 Timothy 2:1 NIV) “ GRACE” means: 1) God’s Saving power 2) God’s Enabling power
  • The verb to “entrust” in 2 Timothy 2:2 includes the idea of depositing , as in a bank account. View slide
  • The sequence of passing the Torch of the Gospel to others is from Paul to Timothy to reliable disciples and to others. View slide
    • God is looking for passionate disciples who experience the “fire” of God in their hearts and are willing to devote their lives to producing fired-up disciples for Christ. Such disciples will, in turn, teach others who will zealously run with the Gospel torch of Christ in the world.
    • I am called to experience intimacy with God daily so that I can pass on or invest the Gospel in other “Timothys” in the church.
    • To do this …
  • 1. I NEED TO POSSESS THE DEDICATION OF A SOLDIER. “ Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.” 2 Timothy 2:3-4
    • As a spiritual soldier of Christ, I must be willing to:
    • suffer hardship and to
    • please Christ – avoid distractions
  • 2. I NEED TO PURSUE THE DISCIPLINE OF AN ATHLETE. “ Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.” 2 Timothy 2:5 NIV
    • To “compete” means to think and act with self-discipline or self control .
  • 3. I NEED TO PRACTICE THE DILIGENCE OF A FARMER. “ The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.” 2 Timothy 2:6 NIV
  • “ Hardworking (NIV) means toil or working hard against big challenges.
    • Rewards of the spiritual harvest (“crops”) are:
    • a) HOLY CHARACTER
    • b) NEW DISCIPLES
    • Ready to pass the Torch (Personal Application):
    • Reflect on the three (3) requirements? Which one do you lack most in your life?
    • Begin a plan to grow in this requirement by seeking the help of a trusted Christian friend who knows you and can help you grow. Pray and study God’s Word by looking for all the references in the Bible for the above three (3) requirements — using an NIV or similar concordance.
    • Prayerfully choose a Christian friend who can work with you on a weekly basis to deepen your spiritual life and growth in Christ. See Jeremiah 20:9. How are you responding to God and His word?
