  • 2. @(&-1%A+8BMonday, December 12, 2011Before we get started, thanks to Courtney Johnston and the staff of the National Digital Forum for theinvitation. All the folks from other institutions who have been so gracious in helping me prepare (and forthe invitations to travel elsewhere—looking forward to thanking you in person soon). Those who Iʼvemet online via chat and twitter.

Lots of people at the Library work on digitalprojects, any one of whom could have made this presentation. Let’s add a disclaimer: If yousee something cool, they probably did it. If you disagree with something, it’s my fault. ;)
  • 4. 3; 3DEMonday, December 12, 2011So, I’m in New Zealand. And I found myself wondering what this crowd might want to hearfrom me, a guy from New York City.
  • 5. Monday, December 12, 2011I do know that there’s amazing work going on here created by many of the people in thisroom. But I didn’t quite know what to expect here.
  • 6. 3; 3DEMonday, December 12, 2011But thinking about it, New Zealand and New York City are remarkably similar.
  • 7. 3; 3DEMonday, December 12, 2011We’re both island nations (OK, NYC is not technically a nation, but it thinks it’s one.).

  • 16. >#/7&7A%-)7<Monday, December 12, 2011but I am a product of libraries. I have had several libraries in my life.
  • 17. Monday, December 12, 2011Library #1: Millville. I hung out here, played Dungeons and Dragons here, met thefirst girl I ever kissed here. (And the second, for that matter.) I don’t rememberborrowing a lot of books.
  • 18. Monday, December 12, 2011It was five minutes from my house. I spent a lot of formative time there.
  • 19. Monday, December 12, 2011Library #2: Mabel Smith Douglass, Rutgers University in New Jersey.
  • 20. Monday, December 12, 2011Lateral exploration, refuge. I don’t remember borrowing a lot of books.
  • 21. Monday, December 12, 2011Library #3: Bobst Library, New York University. Where I got serious, finished my BSand learned to do proper research. Didn’t love this library (intimidating andvertiginous).
  • 22. Monday, December 12, 2011I sat here.
  • 23. Monday, December 12, 2011After I got my degree, I spent a few years selling soap. But I was looking around forsomething with a bit more social import.
  • 24. Monday, December 12, 2011In 2008, I arrived at the NYPL. I draw on those prior library experiences, which werevery emotional in nature and don’t fit neatly in boxes (and certainly weren’t all aboutbooks).
  • 25. Monday, December 12, 2011That background has made me realize that a sappy as it might sound, libraries are largelysupported by the love patrons have for them, and not just the items they provide.
  • 26. Monday, December 12, 2011So, a bit about this library

We have four major research libraries, each with adifferent focus. Unusually for a collection of this scope, they are completely free and open tothe public. The only prerequisite to gain access to the research collections is curiosity.

Wonderfully, over the years, some ofthe most ephemeral, “worthless” things (advertisements, fliers, menus, baseballcards, etc) have become the most valuable since no one else preserved them.
  • 29. Monday, December 12, 2011I often feel like I work in the warehouse in the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark.There is more amazing stuff in here than can be processed by any one brain.
  • 30. e;(&#%.5)$.)),(5$+&7.#-Monday, December 12, 2011OK, if THAT werenʼt a large enough job, this incredibly large research organization also hasthe largest circulating neighborhood branch public library system in the USA, with 90 locations.

  • 37. Monday, December 12, 2011When I think about the process by which I prioritize projects, the metaphor thatcomes to mind is this one from an essay about writing by the American author AnnieDillard. [read]
  • 38. Monday, December 12, 2011I wasn’t sure about using this metaphor, so I went looking for images in our picturecollection to illustrate it.http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchdetail.cfm?trg=1&strucID=431722&imageID=1117611
  • 39. Monday, December 12, 2011The first image that came up was this one from New Zealand, taken not far from here,so I took that as a good sign.
  • 40. "%/7#)9%(#?+7A%+9%?8L%#-%0#/7&7#)?IMonday, December 12, 2011The idea of the chopping block is that it’s easiest to hit your target when you aim past it. So whatdoes that look like in a digital library context? Here’s a brief history:
