  • Yes - you should absolutely make it personal. In order to stand out above the other 100 typical cover letters, make yourself known. Do some research online- refer to past proejcts the firm has done and comment on the design elements which hit home to your personal design philosophy or passions. Mention your personal design philosophy (not many people have those surprsingly enough). Search for video interviews of the firms' principals on youtube and quote them in the cover letter as you stand in agreement with their design inspiration. Firms notice if you put in the effort- alot of times it's just the extra effort that they're looking for. As far as putting off the cover letter- been there, done that! I suggest going to a coffee shop and not leaving until you have at least three done. Pice of cake (or strawberry danish;)! Then get at least two sources to proof read it...and then read it out loud to a friend to make sure your syntax is correct and you sound like yourself, but professional. If you had to pick when to put in sweat equity, now would be the time!

  • I feel that what stops me the most from applying for jobs is writing the cover letter! I have plenty of tools to help me write one but does it need to be personalized for each application? Thanks.
