6. 6. Horror films and Society

After my research on horror films and society at that time on the specific horror film, I found that directors used the bad things that were happening in society to create an idea of a new horror film.

Nosferatu (1922) – society at the time; 70 million people died of influenca. Film about a vampire, all about spreading disease, infection causing death. Zombie Nation (1988) – Society in the late 1960’s in America had loads of protesting, civil rights movement, rioting about Vietnam war and president Nickson being a liar. Film all about thousands of normal people turned into the walking dead by infection and killing the living. Alien (1979) - Society at this time was very big in science fiction, Russia and USA wanting to put people into space, discovering the moon and fear of technology and future. Film about people going into space to find alien creatures that kill people.
 7. 7. Society and Saw

Society:

News had published about the torture at ABU GHRAIB. Between October and December 2003 there were numerous instances of “sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses”.

So a less then a year before the release of Saw American soldiers had been all over the news about the torture toward Iraq prisoners.

Saw The film is all about torture, humiliating people and putting people into a situation they cannot get out of. Although the torture at ABU GHRAIB happened and shocked the world, director James Wan had released his film less then a year after and was very successful. A theory of why people would enjoy to watch saw is that the audience are sadistic and enjoy watching pain inflicted on others.
 8. 8. Hostel

Director: Eli Roth

Genre: Horror, Mystery and Thriller

Plot: 3 backpackers are in Amsterdam where they get locked out of their youth hostel. They are invited into a man's house where he tells them of a hostel somewhere in eastern Europe where the women are all incredibly hot and have a taste for American men. When they get there, everything is too good to be true - the hostel is "to die for"

The director captures the mixture of innocence and entitlement in young American males abroad. The males being confident that their country's power and prestige will make them babe magnets.

Eli Roth creates a young American males fantasy in hostel’s Slovakian village, where life appears to be a non-stop naked sauna party.

 9. 9. Hostel

Another popular film of my generation that involves torture is Hostel, the film which was released just a year after the first Saw, uses 3 teenage backpackers who travel to Amsterdam; a popular destination for young people still today. The teenage backpackers get locked out of their youth hostel. They are invited into a man's house where he tells them of a hostel somewhere in eastern Europe where the women are all incredibly hot and have a taste for American men. When they get there, everything is to good to be true and the hostel is “to die for”.
