1. 1. Hoot, Carl Hiaasen
2. 2. This is the story of a how three young people work to save endangered owls in a florida town. A big corporate restaurant chain wants to develop a piece of land that is used by endangered owls who make their burrows in the ground. The young people discover the company plans on bulldozing the site, which would kill the owls. The three young people start a journey to save the owls and stop the destruction of their habitat. It is a terrific story following their journey of justice for the owls and the environment.
Summary
The students can enhance their experience of reading the novel by researching the topics.
6. 6. Carl Haissen
The author of “Hoot” has written many other novels. His stories usually are connected to the environment or Florida. He writes novels targeted to adults and younger people. It is a great opportunity to connect reading and science (especially 7th grade which is when ecology is taught). His web site provides many links to environmental causes, other novels, and information about his books and him.
http://www.carlhiaasen.com/index.shtml
7. 7. Soundtrack:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B000F2CAD8/ref=pd_krex_dp_001_001?ie=UTF8&track=001&disc=001
This is a sample of the soundtrack for “Hoot”. Music is a great way to engage students in a medium that they enjoy. I always looked forward to teaching poetry with songs because the students connected the relationship between the two.
8. 8. Movie:
The movie “Hoot” is very entertaining. The ending differs from the novel and some other events are altered. It is still a very good movie. The students can compare and contrast the novel and the film. I think it is a great way to develop a book discussion with the students.
Movie trailer
http://www.moviefone.com/movie/hoot/22995/video/hoot-trailer/1438757
