  3. 3. Brazilian Highlands<br />Covers a 3rd of Brazil<br />Extends from Amazon River to Uruguay<br />Old, deeply eroded landscapes<br />Average 600 to 900 meters above sea level<br />Three distinct sub regions<br />Great Escarpment, Parana Plateau, MatoGrosso Plateau<br />
  4. 4. Great Escarpment<br />Rises from the Atlantic coastal plain<br />Elevations exceed 2,700 meters<br />Rich mineral deposits<br />Previously, gold and diamonds<br />Now iron ore and titanium<br />

Parana Plateau<br />Located in Southern Brazil<br />Composed of layers of limestone and sandstone.<br />Agricultural heartland of Brazil<br />Soybeans, sugar cane,<br />fruits and vegetables<br />Many water tributaries<br />Makes for fertile soils<br />Spectacular waterfalls<br /> Iguacu Falls<br />
  6. 6. MatoGrosso Plateau<br />Located in Western Brazil<br />Deeply weathered landscape of rolling hills<br />Many tributaries to the Amazon<br />Interspersed mountain ranges and plateaus<br />Enormous reserves of basic industrial ores<br />Iron ore, aluminum ore and bauxite<br />
  7. 7. Guiana Highlands<br />Large northern outlier of Brazilian Highlands<br />Separated by Amazon River<br />Flat-topped <br />mountainous region<br />Many parts are <br />inaccessible<br />Extremely rich <br />mining regions<br />
  8. 8. Patagonian Plateau<br />Southern most part of South America<br />Borders the Atlantic Coast<br />Consists of series <br />of sedimentary plateaus<br />Year round winds hurt <br />agricultural growth<br />Modest petroleum <br />and natural gas deposits<br />
