COURSE SYLLABUS
1. Course Description: Spanish (I) is an introductory course to the study of the
Spanish language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. As you begin to
explore the Spanish language, keep in mind that learning a new language also means
learning a new culture. This course will prepare you to understand oral and written
communication relating to daily situations such as school, travel, food and family.
2. Student Behavior and Expectations: We are going to work together to create a
classroom environment that promotes respect and care for all. In order to reach that
goal, it is important to put into practice BGA’s five safety guidelines: 1. Ni avergonzar,

policies regarding dress code, tardiness, disruptions to learning, hate speech,

hall pass use, skipping class, and detention. Ask if you have questions.

4. Criteria for evaluation: Complete all of your work with PRIDE, INTEGRITY and
SCHOLARSHIP.
Grades for each term will be based on the following:
Tests: There will be two major tests per term. Tests represent 20% of the grade.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given weekly and represent 20% of the grade. All quizzes will
be announced in class up to a week in advance.
Homework: Assignments include textbook and workbook exercises, worksheets,
reflective essays, interviews, research, online assignments and compositions.
Homework completion represents 20% of the grade.
Participation: Participation, which accounts for 20% of the grade, includes Para
empezar (Do Now), promptness, preparedness, willingness to volunteer answers,
cooperation, classwork and effort to speak Spanish.
Notebook/Binder/Writing Assignments: Students take notes of every lecture in the same
notebook or lined paper in their binder. The notebook and binder are checked weekly
for credit. Other writing assignments must be typed in font 12, arial or times new roman,
double-spaced and should contain proper placement of accent marks. Together the
assigments account for 20% of the grade.
5. Required Materials:
1. Three ring binder (1-2 inches)
2. Dividers
(labeled “Para empezar”, “Classwork”, “Homework”, “Writing”, “Notes”)
3. A spiral notebook OR lined paper, to keep in the “Notes” section
4. Pen or pencil
5. Highlighter
6. Spanish-English dictionary recommended
7. Teacher Availability:
