  • Intro to Digital Media
Digital media like digital audio, digital video and other digital content can be created, referred to and distributed via digital information processing machines.
Digital media represents a profound change from previous (analog) media.
  • Digital Media
The following list of digital media is based on a rather technical view of the term media.
    Cellular phones
    Compact discs
    Digital video
    Televisions
    eBooks

  • Digital Media
An encoder is a device, or a software program that converts information from one format to another.
An audio encoder may be capable of capturing, compressing and converting audio
A video encoder may be capable of capturing, compressing and converting audio/video
  • Digital Media
A decoder is a device which does the reverse of an encoder, undoing the encoding so that the original information can be retrieved.
  • Digital Media
A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal.
A codec encodes a data stream or signal for transmission, storage or encryption, or decodes it for playback or editing.
Codecs are used in videoconferencing, streaming media and video editing applications.
  • MP3
The MP3 lossy audio data compression algorithm takes advantage of a perceptual limitation of human hearing called auditory masking.
The psychoacoustic masking codec was first proposed in 1979 from AT&T-Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ.
  • Digital Audio Devices
    Compact discs

  • Digital Rights Management
DRM technologies attempt to control use of digital media by preventing access, copying or conversion to other formats by end users.

  • Podcasts
    • A podcast (or non-streamed webcast) is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication.
    • iTunes
  • Digital Video
MPEG: The 'Moving Picture Experts Group' (MPEG) is a working group of experts that was formed by to set standards for audio and video compression and transmission.
  • Digital Video
    DVDs
    Digital cameras
    Digital video cameras
    HD Television
    AppleTV
    Google TV
  • Digital Media
Live streaming means taking a video and broadcasting it live over the Internet.
The process involves a camera (video), an encoder to digitize the content, a publisher where the streams are made available to end-users and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver the content.
The media can then be viewed by end-users live.
Security remains one of the main challenges with this new methodology. Digital rights management (DRM) systems are an example of a solution to keep this content secure.
  • Digital Video on the Web
    YouTube
    Dailymotion
    Hulu
    Blip.tv
    Vimeo
    Metacafe
  • Digital Photography
Digital photography is a form of photography that uses an array of light sensitive sensors to capture the image focused by the lens, as opposed to an exposure on light sensitive film.
The captured image is then stored as a digital file ready for digital processing (colour correction, sizing, cropping, etc.), viewing or printing.
