An encoder is a device, or a software program that converts information from one format to another.
An audio encoder may be capable of capturing, compressing and converting audio
A video encoder may be capable of capturing, compressing and converting audio/video

A decoder is a device which does the reverse of an encoder, undoing the encoding so that the original information can be retrieved.

A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal.
A codec encodes a data stream or signal for transmission, storage or encryption, or decodes it for playback or editing.
Codecs are used in videoconferencing, streaming media and video editing applications.

The MP3 lossy audio data compression algorithm takes advantage of a perceptual limitation of human hearing called auditory masking.
The psychoacoustic masking codec was first proposed in 1979 from AT&T-Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ.

Live streaming means taking a video and broadcasting it live over the Internet.
The process involves a camera (video), an encoder to digitize the content, a publisher where the streams are made available to end-users and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver the content.
The media can then be viewed by end-users live.
Security remains one of the main challenges with this new methodology. Digital rights management (DRM) systems are an example of a solution to keep this content secure.
