Empowerment of women

  1. 1. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MARCH 8TH 2011CELEBRATING THE PAST AND PLANNING FOR FUTURE; STRONGLEADERSHIP, STRONG WOMEN AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMENBYSRI VIDYA AND VEDIC AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOUNDATION The status of women in any civilization shows the stage of evolutionwhen the civilization has arrived. With regard to the status of women inIndian society at large, no nation has held their women in higher esteemthan the Hindus. Perhaps no other literature has presented a moreadmirable type of women character than sita, Maitriya, Gargi. HinduMythology witnesses that the status of Hindu women during the vedicperiod was honorable and respectable. Attainment of women in intellectualfield is to be inferred from the fact some of the hymens are attributed thefemale rishis. They were on the same footing as men. They learnt theVedas, were entitled to recite the Vedas and they were teachers as well aslearners. Many prominent women played a leading role in the freedommovement. The important place assigned to women in India dates back tothe time of the Vedas and Smritis. During the Vedic age the position ofwomen in society was very high and they were regarded as equal partnerswith men in all respects. In keeping with this tradition, burden of tears andtoils of the long years of struggle for India’s freedom was borne by the wives, mothers and daughters, silently and cheerfully. The strong culturalbackground of Indian society and high status of women kept them healthyfrom all perspectives – social, physical and psychological.Although we are in a traditional country where women are respected as“ MATRISHAKTI ‘ over the years women have overcome the traditional mindsets and have excelled in professions like teaching, medicine and puresciences. Women have made important contributions in all walks of life andmade inroad in new fields. Ex:- Smt. Krina Mazumdar – a Biotechentrepreneur and CEO of Biocon India Group; Dr. Indira Hinduja whoproduced first scientifically documented test tube baby; Smt. ShahanazHusain – the mother of herbal cosmetics in world; Smt. Madhuri Mathur – alady who invented SUMEET MIXER. 1
  2. 2. At a glance, women in general might look like very simple, docile, unassuming and humble, but make no mistake, for behind this simplestraight face is a razor sharp brain and uncanny ability to execute, toconvert thought into action without much ado. Women contributed in all thespheres of technical advancement of humanity. They held the same burdensof scholarship as the men did and accomplished just as much. She isresourceful, passionate and creative about her work as any other malescientist. Recently a Japanese magazine concluded that Indian Women arenumber one amongst women from various countries in acquiring andapplying IT knowledge. Women have a great part to play in the progress of our country, asthe mental and physical contact of women with life is much more lastingand comprehensive than that of men for nothing was it said “The hand thatrocks the cradle rules the word” in the apron string women is hidden therevolutionary energy, which can establish paradise on this earth. She is themagnificent creation of god, a multi faceted personality with the power ofbenevolence, adjustability, integrity and tolerance, She is companion ofman, gifted with equal mental faculty, a protector and provider, theembodiment of love and affection. In post independence women have played a significant roles asdoctors engineers, judges, pilots, scientists, diplomats, legislators and evenas prime minister. The myth that certain fields were only meant for menhas been demolished by women. They have proved to be more vibrant, dynamic, sincere and perfect in every field. Mother Teresa, P.T. Usha,Mrs.Subulakshmi, Kiran Bedi, Dr.Padmavathi, Smt.Medha Patkar havebecome great name in different fields of their work. Women are actually proving to be academically better and sociallymore active. They are contributing extensively towards the socialtransformation and building of the nation. They are less selfish and morededicated to duty and have much patience than men by nature. Women likeIndira Gandhi, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Margaret Thatcher, ChandrikaKumaratunga have left a indelible mark not only on their nations but also atinternational level. Modern women have risen far above the domestic drudgery. They areeducated and aware enough to deal with any station competently. In thepresent times, they are no longer the inanimate objects. They havestruggled hard to establish the identity of their own. They possess enoughstrength and self- confidence in a brave new world. 2
  3. 3. According to Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s view, aslong as women of the country are not uplifted and granted equal status withmen in all walks of life – political, social, economic, domestic, educational,India could neither progress nor make any significant advance in any field. Women play vital roles in every facet of modern society in numerousareas of scientific and technological development, women have historicallybeen responsible for crucial advances, yet they remain severely under –represented in all major scientific areas, There have been improvements inaccess for women to science over the last two decades. Human resource in a word which is very applicable in science andtechnology organization meaning both men and women power. We womenare not so learned but we are more pure. Without SHAKTI (power) there isno regeneration for the world. There is no chance for the welfare of theworld unless the condition of women is empowered. Women have provedthemselves as equal in many professions as well as proved themselves evenbetter suited than men in others. The traditional role of a man is earning the money for running thehome. This has changed to a great extent. Working women contribute tothe expenses of running their homes as well. However here has been littlecontribution form men in terms of shouldering some of the responsibilitiesof women. Women find the outside world challenging and attractive. They likethe freedom it brings to them. Science has really changed the shape of thisearth. But science couldn’t prosper without the contributions of researchersand scientists. Through out the ages many genius minds have contributedin the technological evolution of this planet. Science and technology have been an integral part of Indiancivilization and culture. Women and men have been active in science fromthe inception of human civilization. One of the defining marks of humanityis the ability to affect and predict our environment. Science is the creationof structure. For our world and technology, the use of structure has beenstepping stone to our progress. Women and men have researched andsolved each emerging need. 3
  4. 4. Most myths and religions place the beginnings of agriculture, laws, civilization, mathematics, calendars, time keeping and medicine into thehands of women. Women contributed in all the spheres of technicaladvancement of humanity. They held the same burdens of scholarship asthe men did, and accomplished just as much. Women were and areresourceful, passionate and creative about their work as any other malescientist. Regardless of how hard there man and woman of the house work, there are certain areas of the home that are the women province in happytimes and her nemesis in not so happy times. She has contributed in all thespheres of technical advancement of humanity. They held the sameburdens of scholarship as the men did and accomplished just as much.Women were and are resourceful, passionate and creative about their workas any other male scientist. Working women contribute to the expenses ofrunning their homes as well as men. On the surface, this seems to strikesense. Women are more prone to workplace because of the many roles theyplay in life; as career woman, wife, mother, daughter and friend. The status of women in modern India is sort of a paradox. If on one handshe is at the peak of ladder of success, on the other hand she is mutelysuffering the violence afflicted on her by her own family members. As comparedwith past women in modern times have achieved a lot but in reality they have tostill travel a long way. Their path is full of roadblocks. The women have left thesecured domain of their home and are not in the battlefield of life, fully armoredwith their talent. They had proven themselves, but in India they are yet to gettheir dues. Though there are problems in the lives of Indian women but they arealways ready to fight all the odds and enjoy their life to the full they have theirown talent, hobbies, and they socialize according to Indian customs. 4
  5. 5. Conclusions:- Woman is the magnificent creation of god, a multi faceted personalitywith the power of benevolence, adjustability, integrity and tolerance. She iscompanion of man, gifted with equal mental faculty, a protector andprovider, the embodiment of love. "Give me good mothers" said Napoleon, "and I will give you a goodnation." Our mothers in free India have to play an important role. They arethe makers of the fate of the nation for "the hand that rocks the cradle is thehand that rules the world.” Our constitution grants equality of status and ofopportunity with men. They have distinguished themselves in various walksof life. With the help of these social reformers women of India slowly startedrecognizing her true potential. She started questioning the rules laid downfor her by the society. As a result, started breaking barriers and earned arespectable position in the world. Today Indian women have excelled in eachand every field from social work to visiting space station. There is no areawhich remained unconquered by Indian women. Whether it is politics, sports, entertainment, literature, technology everywhere we can hearapplauses for her. Indian women have not just made their mark on earth but they haveengraved their name in the whole universe by flying to space. KalpanaChawla, who was the member of Colombia Space Shuttle, which explodedon its way back, was the first Indian women astronaut who visited spacestation. And following on her footsteps another woman of Indian originSunita Williams has become the second one to be the member ofInternational Space Station crew. Indian women have mastered anything and everything which awoman can dream of. But she still has to go a long way to achieve equalstatus in the minds of Indian men. Really women are less selfish and more dedicated to duty and havemuch patience than men by nature. In order to make optimum use of ourvast womanpower, we must liberate Indian woman of many social taboos. However, mere legislation cannot emancipate the lot of our women. Thisneeds a radical change in our mental make up and our social structure. Forthis, we shall have to foster a social emancipating spirit in our everyday life. The conservative male chauvinistic attitude shall have to give way toliberalism. It can be said with a sense of pride and confidence that thefuture of women in India is quite bright and prosperity will be safe in theirhands. 5
  6. 6. Emotional, affectionate, caring and yet firm, a woman is theperennial source of inspiration for man in the odyssey of life. Despitehurdles like male chauvinism and indifference towards them, women haveproved their worth as teachers, administrators, officers, entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, nurses, and computer scientists and almost in all thespheres of activity contributing to social transformation and nation building. Now, the women in India are heading towards advancement and bydint of their devotion, dedication and determination, women like MotherTeresa, Ramadevi, Bhagini Nivedita, Indira Gandhi and many more othersplayed a vital role in the transformation of the nation socially.  6
