"Laughter is the best medicine" …

"Laughter is the best medicine"
We hear this quote a lot, yet, there are very few well-marketed methods that take advantage of this. My name is Mitchell Fukumoto and I plan to revolutionize calming by combining technology and humor to bring existing humorous media to you.

  • 1. “Laughter is the best medicine”A State-of-the ArtAnalysis on laughter and stressreduction
    Presented by: Mitchell Fukumoto
  • 2. Positive Effects of Laughter:
Hormones: Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
Physical Release: The “laugh until you cry” syndrome.
Internal Workout: Works the abs. “Laugh until it hurts” syndrome.
Distraction: Laughter brings the focus away from anger, guilt, stress and negative emotions.*
Perspective: We view stressful events as either a “threat” or a “challenge.” Humor can help us view these events as “challenges,” making them less threatening and more positive. See cognitive reframing.*
Social Benefits: Laughter connects people, just like smiling or kindness. Laughter is also contagious.

  • 3. How do I know laughter works?
    • Perspective
Laughing together: Laughter is effective because it is contagious. Funny things are funnier when other people are laughing with you.
Everyday humor: Laughter is effective because it is everywhere. Funny things happen in your life every day.
“Fake it until you make it”:Laughter is effective because even fake laughter works. Studies show that the mere act of smiling or laughing (real or not) has positive effects on our bodies.
It’s “FUN FUNFUNFUN”: Laughter is just plain FUN! Duh.
T.V. and Movies:Laughter is effective because it makes money.

  • 4. Existing Solutions
    Laughter Yoga
    Laughter Therapy
    Comedy clubs, Sitcoms, TV/Movie Comedies
These solutions are great calmers, but they are not easily accessible. You need to go out of your way to calm yourself. With innovations such as Youtube and Google, the laughs can be brought to you with technology.
  • 5. Laughter Yoga
    • Yoga + laughing
    • 6. Laughing for the sake of laughing: you don’t need a reason to laugh
    • 7. Laughing with others
    • 8. Focuses on the mind and breathing like yoga.
You need to be at least somewhat physically active to do yoga. Yoga is also not for everyone. Does not focus on laughter derived from humor. I believe genuine laughter is more effective than faked laughter.

  • 9. Laughter Therapy
    • Laughter workshops/clubs
    • 10. Group laughter
    • 11. Not really based in humor
    • 12. Laughter as a form of exercise
For the same reasons that people don’t exercise, people will not take advantage of laughter clubs or laughter workshops.

  • 13. Comedy clubs, Sitcoms, TV/Movie Comedies
This resource has a lot of potential as a calmer. Already established market of users. Just need to get people to realize the potential for more than just fun and laughs.
    • Takes a lot of timeper sitting
    • 14. Might require money
    • 15. Are not that accessible. Need to seek out on your own.
    • 16. Not marketed as a “calmer”
  • Here’s a joke for you:
  • 17.
  • 18. Laughter Via Technology
    Expert focus:
    Formal:
“Bring spontaneous laughter to stressed Stanford undergrads using existing media and technology.”
    Informal:
“Feeling stressed? Let me show you something hilarious.”
    Gain perspective and be distracted.
