(p.58) <ul><li>Countries around the world have become more and more closely related. </li></ul><ul><li>On the one hand, the political activities in a certain region ( 地區 ) not only have an influence on the region itself, but also on other regions. </li></ul><ul><li>On the other hand, politics in the local region has also become more influenced by the global political environment ( 全球政治環境 ). </li></ul><ul><li>Due to this political globalization, numerous ( 眾多的 ) international intergovernmental organisations have emerged. </li></ul>

The increasing influence of international intergovernmental organisations (p.58) <ul><li>The function of international intergovernmental organisations is to provide countries with a political platform ( 政治平台 ), which enables them to take part in political policy-making ( 政策制定 ) through discussion and negotiation ( 談判 ). </li></ul><ul><li>As countries around the world have more contacts economically, culturally and politically, every country wants to influence the policies of other countries or protect their own interests by becoming a member of an international intergovernmental organisation. </li></ul><ul><li>This gives rise to the founding of more international intergovernmental organisations. It also strengthens their influence. </li></ul>
    • 4. Task 3 International intergovernmental organisations in the event of bird flu ( 禽流感 ) <ul><li>Q1. From the global political perspective, suggest ways to prevent infectious diseases ( 傳染性疾病 ) from spreading ( 擴散 ) worldwide. </li></ul><ul><li>The World Health Organization can distribute ( 分發 ) information about infectious diseases and preventive measures ( 預防措施 ). </li></ul><ul><li>Countries can jointly ( 共同地 ) set up a system to report the local spread of the diseases, establish ( 建立 ) viral ( 病毒 ) and medical ( 醫藥的 ) research and development centres, and formulate policies ( 制定政策 ) to control travel in the event of a disease outbreak ( 爆發 ). </li></ul>

    • 9. 3. What contributions did the international intergovernmental organisations make in preventing the spread of infectious diseases? Illustrate with examples. <ul><li>The World Bank subsidises ( 資助 ) poor countries to fight against bird flu. </li></ul><ul><li>An announcement ( 宣告 ) issued by the World Health Organization stated that effectively fighting against bird flu depends on cooperation among countries. It demanded all members report any incidents ( 事件 / 個案 ) that might threaten public health ( 公共衛生 ). </li></ul><ul><li>The United Nations planned to set up a warning system. </li></ul><ul><li>The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN 東南亞國家聯盟 ) decided to set up a regional network of antiviral drugs stockpile ( 積存 ). </li></ul><ul><li>The European Union ( 歐盟 ) and the World Bank raised money internationally to sponsor ( 贊助 ) activities to fight bird flu. </li></ul>
