Items such as the eight parts of speech andvocabulary terms, and concepts such as writing skills, comprehension skills, and oratoricalEnglish, will be address in class, along with a wealth of others. Students will develop theirgrammatical skills as well, as a good portion of the class will be dedicated to discovering properusage of the written and oral English language.Course ObjectivesStudents will be able to: 1. Identify and use parts of speech. 2. Write complete and effective sentences. 3. Use proper capitalization and punctuation when writing. 4. Use correct spelling when writing and speaking. 5. Practice public speaking and other communication skills. 6. Write to express a perspective of opinions. 7. Write to persuade, compare and contrast. 8. Write a research essay. 9. One composition notebook- All notes and assignments will be done in this notebook and must be brought to class every day. Students will only use loose-leaf paper to complete tests and quizzes. 2. Blue or black pens and/or pencils to write daily agenda, take notes, and complete assignments. 3. (Optional) Dictionary- Vocabulary is a major element of English, so it will be necessary for students to have a dictionary on-hand for reference purposes. Students may choose to leave their dictionary at home, but having them in class proves immeasurably useful during discussions, vocabulary assignments, silent reading periods, etc. There are a few available in the classroom, but are on a first-come-first-serve basis.Grading System *Please be advised that students are expected to adhere to the school policies and procedures as per the student handbook/planner*
  • 3. Participation- 10%Seatwork/Homework- 15%Quizzes- 20%Essays- 25%Exams- 30%Total- 100%AssignmentsSeatwork and homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Students are required to write theDaily Agenda in their school planners and have a parent(s)/guardian(s) sign daily.Guidelines that students should follow regarding assignments are as follows: 1. Full credit will be given only to those assignments turned in neatly and on-time. 2. At the top right-hand corner of the assignment, students should write his or her full name, the date the assignment is due, and the class period he or she belongs to. 3. Late work is accepted only for excused absences or when pre-approved by the teacher. 4. Assignments are due at the beginning of class unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. 5. Cheating is unacceptable. Students caught engaging in academic dishonesty, including copying from one another, plagiarizing another’s work, sharing test/quiz information with other classes, will receive zero credit for the assignment/test in question, sent to the office, and will have his or her parent(s) called immediately. Further disciplinary action will be taken if necessary.Quizzes and TestsQuizzes will be given (planned and unplanned) after any given lesson and at the beginning ofclass. Tests will be given after each spelling lesson and after each Unit.AttendanceDaily attendance is absolutely essential to the success of your child in this course. If your childis absent, please be aware that he/she will be expected to make-up class work or any otherassignment missed.   • 4. AttireF.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School has implemented school uniforms to be worn by all students;nothing else will be accepted in the classroom. Open-toe footwear is strictly prohibited.Additionally, the following items are strictly prohibited from being worn inside the classroom: 1. Sunglasses 2. Hats 3. Bandanas (regardless of color) 4. Any items of clothing that may be offensive or not conducive to classroom learning.Miscellaneous ItemsUsage of the following items are also prohibited while inside the classroom unless otherwiseinstructed. These items include, but are not limited to: 1. iPods 2. Mobile devices (mobile phones, beepers, etc.) 3. Electronic Devices (laptops, cameras, gaming devices) 4. Toys (miniature skateboards, kungis, etc.) 5. Any other items that detract from the lesson at hand.Parent/Student/Teacher CommunicationAn open line of communication between parent(s), student(s), and teacher is crucial. A largepart of communication will be through your child(ren)’s school planner, phone calls, and email.For more pressing issues, an in-school meeting/conference may be scheduled to discuss astudent’s attendance, behavior, or academics. Practice good communication skills at all times.Disciplinary ActionsShould students commit minor offenses, the following actions will be taken:1st Offense- Verbal Warning2nd Offense- Written Communication through school planner or email and lunch detention.3rd Offense- Call parents and lunch detention.4th Offense- Referral to school guidance counselor and inform parent(s).5th Offense- Parent- Teacher Conference.6th Offense- Referral to the Discipline Office (work detail or suspension may be given).Students will be referred for major offenses, such as: 1. Insubordination 2. Skipping 3. Smoking 4. Damaging school property 5. Fighting 6.
