What does MindWing Concepts do? MindWing Concepts provides highly interactive professional development workshops and multisensory materials for public school districts, private schools, early childhood settings and parents around the globe. Our goal is to give every child- regardless of age, ability or culture – the skills to think, communicate & learn effectively in order to achieve academic and social success. MindWing Concepts, Inc was founded in Springfield, MA by a speech and language pathologist to further her passion: giving children the skills to be successful in school and in life. Our methodology is rooted in language development, specifically the discourse level of language to include conversation, narration (stories) and exposition (information text). Problems at the discourse level are evident when students experience difficulties using language to think, communicate and learn. Our methodology effectively targets cognitive, linguistic and social skills – simultaneously! In addition to improving literacy skills, this method enables children to learn to “tell their story,” recognize emotions and motivations of others, take perspective, build empathy, convey information and resolve conflicts in life. These are the skills that are essential for positive, contributing members of society both in the workplace and in interpersonal relationships with family and friends. Presenter’s Biography Maryellen Rooney Moreau, M.Ed. CCC-SLP is the Founder and President of MindWing Concepts. Over the past 35 years of her professional career, she has held positions that led her to developing a methodology to give children the skills to be successful in school and in life. In the early 1970s, she began her career as a School-Based Speech Language Pathologist in the Hartford Public Schools where she taught the first Language Disabilities Class in the city. In the late 1970s she accepted a position as Assistant Professor at American International College (AIC) where she taught courses in Speech & Language Development to students getting their degree in early childhood education, elementary education, special education & reading. In the mid-1980s, while at the college she became a Diagnostician at the Curtis Blake Child Development Center where she spear-headed their public school outreach component. Concurrently she served as Coordinator of Intervention Curriculum and Professional Development at the Curtis Blake Day School for children with language learning disabilities. In 1991 she created the Story Grammar Marker® -after years if research and practice- and was awarded a United States patent. Moreau then founded MindWing Concepts to further her passion: teaching children to think and communicate. Moreau is a nationally recognized presenter having provided professional development to thousands of educators throughout the United States and Canada. MindWing Concepts’ tools are in the hands of over a half million children worldwide. How to Make a "Cold" Re-Telling "Hot!" Other areas of focus for this hands-on approach are the main idea, the plot diagram, beginning-middle-end and “story sparkle” such as: conjunctions, linguistic & mental state verbs, adverbs and adjectives. The presenter will also delineate assessment and progress monitoring measures for re-telling and writing stories. This approach is appropriate Pre-K through Elementary school children in general education as well as with children with Language Learning Disorders, English Language Learners, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and children who are Victims of Trauma, Abuse and Neglect in therapy, classroom and/or clinical settings. MindWing’s tools such as SGM®, Braidy™, TTW, WTL™ and ThemeMaker® provide the intervention necessary for oral language development, comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and pragmatics. With States mandating Response-to-Intervention initiatives and the necessity of schools to make AYP, now, more than ever, there is a strong focus on tracking student progress & collecting data inform instruction. It is the analysis, interpretation and use of the data that will ultimately make the difference for the child!
