What is Twitter and Why Do I Need to Be On It?• Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows users 140 characters to get their messages across.• The network provides users with a wide- ranging audience for messages.• It’s one of the fastest growing social networking sites out there.
Twitter Facts• Twitter has the strongest growth of any social network, surpassing Pinterest, Reddit, nad LinkedIn• It’s used by 2 times as many women as men.• Its largest demographic are people ages 25-55• 60% of all users have some college education• Use of Twitter has doubled in the last 12 months.
How do I start?• Go to http://twitter.com and register for an account.• Find people to follow. Then look at who they follow.
For example...When I first joined Twitter, I followed Teri Lesesne, bylooking at who SHE follows, I was able to get 976ideas for other people and organizations to follow.By following Donalyn Miller, I got 2,030 ideas forpeople to follow.Of course, I don’t follow ALL of those people; instead,I explored the profiles of those who seemedintriguing and branched out from there.
Once you start to follow, people will follow you....especially once you change your avatar from the stock-issued egg photo and begin tweeting yourself. As you tweet, people re-tweet you, then more people willbegin to follow you.For example, if Donalyn re-tweets one of my tweets, 10,090 people will see what I have to say!
