  4. 4. Michael David MILLER Bibliothécaire de liaison | Liaison Librarian ▪ What is plagiarism? ▪ "Plagiarism means the representation of another’s work, published or unpublished, as one’s own or assisting another in representing another’s work, published or unpublished, as his or her own." (McGill University, 2013) ▪ Examples of plagiarism may be found on the Students Rights and Responsibilities website. Why cite sources? - 2
  5. 5. Michael David MILLER Bibliothécaire de liaison | Liaison Librarian ▪ You must cite when you: ▪ paraphrase someone else’s idea. ▪ take a direct quote from a source (word for word). ▪ use an idea that belongs to someone else. ▪ use data such as statistics, graphics, etc. ▪ translate a text. ! Source (personal translation) : Bibliothèque Myriam et J.-Robert Ouimet de HEC Monréal When should/do you cite?
  6. 6. Michael David MILLER Bibliothécaire de liaison | Liaison Librarian ▪ In-text citations ▪ Author-date ▪ Numbered ▪ Footnotes ▪ Bibliography (titled References according to the APA rules) Where do you cite?
  7. 7. Michael David MILLER Bibliothécaire de liaison | Liaison Librarian ▪ In the text of your document ▪ With page numbers (print or online) ▪ Examples: ▪ (Halachmi, 2005, p. 315) ▪ (Griffiths & Lyle, 2005, p. A.24) ▪ (Smith et al., 1997, p. 151) How do you cite in-text according to APA ? - 1

  9. 9. Michael David MILLER Bibliothécaire de liaison | Liaison Librarian How do you cite in-text according to APA? - 3 My paper ! Many scholars believe that fuel consumption will increase ( Halley, 2008). It is likely that “by the year 2030 fuel consumption will have doubled” (Halley, 2008, p. 378). Halley (2008) continues by saying “the average American will continue to use his/ her car 2 times/day” (p. 120). If you are paraphrasing, you only need the author and date. If you use the author as part of the sentence, put the author and date and then the page number at the end (if it’s a quote) If you directly quote, you need the author, date and page number

  12. 12. Michael David MILLER Bibliothécaire de liaison | Liaison Librarian An APA example: In-text citations and bibliography My paper ! According to some experts, human resources is a growing field in Canada (Taylor & Young, 2003). Smith (2002) states that “the number of HR professionals will only continue to grow over the next decade” (p. 23). I think Smith is correct. I believe that human resources is a growing profession. Johnson (2008) however believes that due to outsourcing, HR professionals will be less needed in the coming years. He writes, “there will be a significant decline in the profession” (Johnson, 2008, p.30). References ! Johnson, T. (2008). Outsourcing: Its effects on Canada’s workforce.
