Facts About Turtles <ul><li>There are from 250-300 turtle species. </li></ul><ul><li>Turtles are cold blooded. </li></ul><ul><li>The largest turtle (leatherback) can be from 4-8 feet long. </li></ul><ul><li>The first turtle lived close to 185 million years ago. </li></ul><ul><li>Many turtles have become extinct, or endangered due to humans hunting, and capturing them. Also, by ruining their habitat. </li></ul>

    • 4. Continued…. <ul><li>Some turtles carry salmonella, which is a bacteria, so some turtles can no longer be sold as pets. </li></ul>

Turtles and Laying Eggs <ul><li>All turtles lay their eggs on land. </li></ul><ul><li>The temperature eggs are hatched in determines their gender for some types of turtles. </li></ul><ul><li>Cooler weather usually produces males. </li></ul><ul><li>Females are usually produced in warmer weather. </li></ul><ul><li>After the mother hatches her eggs she covers them up and leaves them to take care of themselves. </li></ul>

Sea Turtles! <ul><li>There are 7-8 species of sea turtles. </li></ul><ul><li>Green Sea turtles can hold their breath for 5 hours. </li></ul><ul><li>It is illegal to touch sea turtles in Hawaii. </li></ul><ul><li>Sea turtles are considered the fastest turtles. </li></ul><ul><li>Green sea turtles can swim up to 20 mph for short periods of time. </li></ul><ul><li>They can lay up to 200 eggs at a time. </li></ul>
    • 10. A Turtles Body <ul><li>A turtles shell has two layers. The first is part of the skeleton. </li></ul><ul><li>Turtles have no teeth. </li></ul><ul><li>They have sharp beaks. </li></ul><ul><li>Have a good sense of </li></ul><ul><li>touch, sight, and smell. </li></ul>
    • 11. How Global Warming can Affect Turtles <ul><li>As you all know global warming has been causing the earth to heat up. This is causing warmer temperatures. As I said before the temperature at which the baby turtle is born at helps determine their gender. If the weather continues to increase in temperatures, soon, only females will be born. That means there wont be any new baby turtles. It could possibly lead to the extinction of sea turtles. </li></ul>
