    • Origin of Volcanoes By Adam Poff and Dustin Innerst
      • In ancient times, man was without fire! Fire’s power was solely reserved for the almighty gods.
      • Prometheus, a Titan, became the champion of mankind by stealing a flame from the hearth of Olympus and bestowing its great power upon man.
      • For a time man treated Prometheus’ gift with respect. Fire became the source of man’s greatness and prosperity. But…
      • … man abused their gift and the world was overtaken with the terrors of man’s mistake.
      • From above, Zeus viewed the chaos and cursed Prometheus’ traitorous actions; the responsibility of Earth’s well-being now laid in hands.
      • Taking pity upon humanity Zeus gathered all of the fire into a ball…
      • … and removed it from the scorched Earth below. It was as if a second sun had filled the sky. Now only the question of what to do with such power remained.
      • Prometheus could not escape Zeus’ wrath. He was imprisoned on Mount Olympus until his fate could be decided.
      • Zeus determined the proper punishment for Prometheus would be to experience the very destruction released on the world because of his doing.
      • The fire Zeus collected from the world would now be sealed inside it, along with Prometheus. His punishment would be to burn in the inferno that he sparked.
      • However the punishment would not continue forever. All over Earth chasms were created to let some of the fire out, volcanoes. Every few decades fire would be released from one of these volcanoes.
      • Eventually the fire would be completely released and volcanoes would lay dormant, but until that time a great fire burns in the Earth’s core where Prometheus is imprisoned.
