Butler 1 Blended Media Listening Assessment Handout

  1. 1. A LISTENING ASSESSMENT An effective way to improve communications is to become a better listener. This assessment will help you focus on where you may need improvement. To determine your listening quotient, complete this assessment, by placing an “X” for each statement on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being a low skill level and 5 a high skill level). Listening Logic Listening Assessment Statements Rating Category 1–2–3–4-5 I maintain the appropriate level of eye contact. I listen to what people are actually saying and avoid trying to anticipate. FocusAttention I use nods, uh-huhs and other encouragements. I avoid interjecting notions that diminish or detract from the message. Category Totals I summarize what others say, to assure listening accuracy.. ConclusionsInteraction I list actionable items resulting from the dialog. I hold off judging the merit of what people say until the dialog conclusion. If the other person is long winded or boring, I continue listening. Category Totals When information is vague or may have multiple meanings, I ask for examples. I take notes of key points and use them to clarify issues. If I disagree, I do not interrupt, just to set the record straight. IssuesExplicit I request copies of any documents that influence understanding and recall. Category Totals
  2. 2. Listening Logic Listening Assessment Statements Rating Category 1–2–3–4-5 I pay attention to nonverbal cues (body language & expressions). Even if I know what will be said next, I wait for people to finish their point. I rephrase important statement that could have multiple connotations NotionsImplicit I ask open-ended questions to capture further information. Category Totals I assure confidentiality when it is appropriate. I do not assume that missing information is unimportant. VoidsInformation I probe for key information that may be missing. I do not pursue information that is not germane to the dialog. Category Totals I ask clarifying questions when what people say is inconsistent. My biases and opinions do not affect my ability to focus on what is being said. I request a review on data that conflicts. DisparitiesData I surface any disparities in ways that are not critical to others present or referenced. Category Totals Survey Grand Totals
