  • What was Jesus just talking about? He doesn’t address her, and he knows her financial plight without talking to her
She went unnoticed by the religious elite, and they apparently don’t know her situation
How can you be a good neighbor without knowing people?
  • It’s very clear that Jesus is concerned about these two extremes and the danger of them both to the Kingdom
We need to be living in the center, Trusting God always, No Matter what

  • historic premillennialism -- belief that Christ will return, end the reign of the antichrist, believers will be resurrected and rule with Christ for a millennia, followed by the final judgement, when a new earth is instituted
amillennialism -- belief that rejects the idea of Christ reigning for a millennia on the earth, and states that all will be resurrected upon Christ’s return for judgement, and the righteous will be part of the new earth and the unbelievers will be cast into the lake of fire.
dispensational premillennialism -- a recent theory, states that Jesus will rapture his church to heaven, then Israel is dealt with during a 7 year tribulation ended with the battle of Armageddon, where Christ will return with the raptured church to pass final judgement on the world. The wicked, satan and his demons will be thrown into the lake of fire and the new earth will be a reality. (the rapture is also debated to be pre, mid, and post tribulation)
postmillennialism -- essentially, this view states that the church is the agent of change in the world, and through the preaching of the gospel, a millennia of peace will be a reality. After the earth is worthy of Christ’s return, he will come to inhabit.

  • When??? How can be prepared????
There are nineteen imperatives in vv.5-37. This makes it abundantly clear that the main purpose of the discourse is not to satisfy curiosity about the future but to give practical, ethical teaching. In this discourse Jesus combines eschatology with exhortation, with the emphasis on the latter. He is preparing his disciple—and beyond them the church—to live and to witness in a hostile world.
  • So that no one lead you astray!!!!!!
Beginning birth pains are nothing compared to birth pain, but most moms will say they are worth it!!!
  • Not a recipe for getting Jesus to come back!!
If you are going to follow me, you must be in it for the long haul
Micah 7:5-7 -- 5 Put no trust in a neighbor; have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms; 6 for the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house. 7 But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.

Daniel 7:13-14 13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

  • Typology: Old Testament prophecies often are about present, but applicable in the future
Others also noted that it was easier for heaven and earth to pass than for God to forget his covenant or his words (e.g., Jer 31:35-37). Here Jesus speaks of his own words in the same manner.
35 Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar-- the Lord of hosts is his name: 36 If this fixed order departs from before me, declares the Lord, then shall the offspring of Israel cease from being a nation before me forever. 37 Thus says the Lord: If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be explored, then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done, declares the Lord.
(cryptic and unclear, with the focus is on the FACT that God is at work and we can trust him)
  • Expectation is that we should be ready, but not jumping like skittish little animals
Hope = trust in God...... Not demanding signs wonders and answers
  • \"I hope daddy gets home early,\" means, \"I don't have any certainty that daddy will get home on time, I only desire that he does.\"
\"Our hope is that Jim will arrive safely,\" means, \"We don't know if he will or not, but that is our desire.\"

  • Faith == The promise of God’s covenant, of God’s love, of salvation, of Jesus himself, forever in the presence of God (We Trust God no matter what, and rest knowing he is good)
Hope == Our prayers for future change, healing, action, (it may not be God’s will, but we trust anyway, out of our faith)

    2. 2. 41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. 9. 9. 1 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings! 2 And Jesus said to him, Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down. Tuesday, March 24, 2009

    15. 15. 3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished? 5 And Jesus began to say to them, See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, I am he! and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains. Tuesday, March 24, 2009
    16. 16. 9 But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Tuesday, March 24, 2009
    17. 17. 14 But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18 Pray that it may not happen in winter. 19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. 22. 22. 20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. 21 And then if anyone says to you, Look, here is the Christ! or Look, there he is! do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand. Tuesday, March 24, 2009
    23. 23. 24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. 24. 24. 28 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Tuesday, March 24, 2009
    25. 25. 32 But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake--for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning-- 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.
