“Iʼm Sorry” is NOT Repentance
“Iʼm Sorry” is NOT Repentance

God cannot be MANIPULATED by you,
and is not OBLIGATED to you
How is this seen in

A change of mind, so that we can see God

  • Anything other than this IS NOT the GOSPEL
Many variations have popped up over the centuries, but this is the only Gospel we can have hope in
  • 1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand,2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--unless you believed in vain.

  • Jesus isn’t just informing them.... he’s warning them
Today, I think the warning is still real, and for many of us here this morning
  • He gives God all the credit
He hasn’t stolen, he is a fair man all matters, he has never cheated on his wife!!
He fasts more than most, and tithes 20%
He sounds like a good man, we would all like in our church
  • Tax collectors are always back.... sellouts of their own people for personal gain
Begging for mercy and knows no posturing will get past the mind of God
He was justified because of his honestly about himself, and his understanding of the holiness of God

  • “yes, I’ve accepted Christ as Savior, so I’m a Christian. But I’m just not ready for him to be Lord of my entire life.”
In other words, they claim they can have faith in Jesus and be saved, and yet not repent of sin
    That isn’t Biblical
  • Repentance is not “Worldly Sorry”
We feel bad, but we don’t change!!!!
Opposite of Repentance is GETTING CAUGHT
We’ve seen this play out in media with Presidents, Sports figures, and sadly pastors
“I’m sorry” has become cultural repentance, but it’s not biblical!!!

  • Feel bad
    Come forward
    Pray with a pastor
Feel better now that I told someone
    Go back to my seat
In a matter of time, continue the same behavior that made me feel bad
  • Luke 5:32 -- “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Luke 15:21 -- the prodigal son repents, and says “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you”
Psam 51 -- after David has cheated with Bathsheba, killed her husband, and gotten caught, he repents. “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight”

  • “the difference between an unconverted and a converted man is not that the one has sins and the other has none; but that the one takes part with his cherished sins against a dreaded God, and the other takes part with a reconciled God against his hated sins.” -- William Arnot, 1884
  • Trust in Him, Repent of You,
Renew your mind by seeking help
Know that God loves YOU, not some future version of you.
But you cannot stay the same

    12. 12. Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.
    13. 13. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
