  • Satan uses two things to destroy people ....
    Pain in suffering, that causes doubt and pleasure of comfort that leads to prideful apathy
    1 John is a family epistle... So very important for believers in the church
    Gnostics denied the humanity of Jesus... Claimed to be super intellectual
  • They are eyewitnesses..... not just spreading a story ... false testimony would have gotten you killed and this letter destroyed
    Word = Life Manifest = life of Jesus Seen it = physical body
    Fellowship = relationship with God, which before wasn’t possible

    Jesus came to complete this law, bring hope, inspire followers that he was God in flesh, and then died taking our sins and being the justification of us all, proving God’s righteousness. We now wait and work.... longing for the day Jesus returns to redeem all creation.

    I think a large part of us internally is scared to embrace God on this level, because it means our agendas fall away and we will go anywhere and do anything he asks of us.......
    So we keep him at arms length, treating him like a waiter fetching us our requests and then melting away into the background

    We are made to have desires, but they are only good in light of God and with him at the center

  • Isaac Backus, the great Baptist, was an exhorter before he was a preacher. In revolutionary America, the exhorter had a particular task in the congregation, and it was not one that was likely to be popular. After the preacher had preached, it was his responsibility to apply the message. This might mean going up to somebody and saying, "This is going to be how you change your behavior." Backus was 15 years old when he took on this assignment. He would come up after the preaching and say, "Now, Widow Jones, this means you are going to have to change the way you raise your children."     Calling them to remain confident in what they already know.... don’t let some fool shake your faith, and cause you stress

    This should be a weekly or even daily pattern of our walk with God

    Every sin is a sin against God alone, and he forgives you anyway because of Jesus alone
    Repentance is “turning the other way” .... it’s the hard work after confession
    Don’t let your confessions be cheapened without repentance... it’s a slap in the face to Jesus

    Jesus called us to a higher command than the law..... it’s why you can’t stop at the 10 Commandments

    Again, His commandments refers to the entirety of scripture

  • John Stott: -- This explains how the lives of 3,000 people were transformed on the day of Pentecost. It was not that they had discovered new evidence concerning the resurrection or the deity of Christ. That objective evidence had been there ever since Easter morning. It was the activity of the Spirit ‘testifying’ to the truth and to the person of Christ that brought a multitude to faith, as they repented, found forgiveness and were baptized (Acts 2:36–41).
