Migration in Catalonia
Before the Spanish civil war (1936-1939), many Catalan people migrated to America, many of them chose Cuba.
After the civil war, thousands of Catalan people fled to France trying to escape from political repression. In the years that followed the war, Catalonia received thousands of emigrants from the rest of Spain. Many of them also left their home rural areas fleeting from political repression. In the 1960’s and 1970’s hundreds of thousands chose Catalonia trying to find better working conditions and a better future.
Nowadays, about half the population of Catalonia has its origins in the rest of Spain.
