Overview of YouTube<br />YouTube is a popular video hosting and sharing service that was purchased by Google in 2006. <br />The service lets users view and upload video files. <br />In addition to hosting videos, the service lets users rate videos, add comments, and subscribe to their favorite producers.<br />

History and Creator of YouTube<br />YouTube was founded in a garage in February 2005 by three men by the names of Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim and officially launched in December of that same year. <br />The service became an almost instant hit.<br /> YouTube was purchased by Google in 2006 for approximately 1.6 billion dollars, even though YouTube was not yet earning a profit.<br />

Purpose of YouTube<br />Video sharing with the rest of the internet world.<br />Although it starts out with mostly personal videos with pretty useless tidbits, it&apos;s growing to become a place where amateur journalists or bystanders can post their up-to-the-minute video on news and happenings. <br />Media and traditional companies have also used it to drum up interests, in their movie releases and advertising. <br />It&apos;s also been used in politicking, as witnessed by the various presidential campaigns. <br />
  6. 6. What Sort of Content Makes up YouTube?<br />YouTube is a place for people to engage in new ways with video whenever and wherever they want. YouTube began as a personal video sharing service, and has quickly grown into the world’s leading video community on the Internet. <br />YouTube offers a community for everyone, including personal video creators such as cooking, beauty, health and fitness experts; aspiring and professional musicians; amateur and established filmmakers; comedians; and professional content owners.<br />

Uses for YouTube<br />Video embedding: Users can insert a YouTube video into Facebook and MySpace accounts, blogs, or other Web sites where anyone can watch them.<br />Public or private videos: Users can elect to broadcast their videos publicly or share them privately with friends and family upon upload.<br />Subscriptions: Users are able to keep track of their favorite users&apos; new videos.<br />Record from Webcam: Users with a webcam and Flash software are able to instantly record video responses or normal videos onto the site rather than having to prerecord and then upload the video.<br />TestTube: This is an area where YouTube engineers and developers conduct alpha testing for new features in development. Users are encouraged to participate in the development process and are welcome to evaluate the feature.<br />
