Is a good initiative every time a media company takes the lead to understand what is going on in the market. Are there any good case study of the influence of social media towards a brand? Where we see the need to use use social media in most communication be it online or offline. The question we need to ask - are we utilising what we have to leverage what we know?

More replies regarding the white paper corrections from Tom:

    Hi
Thank you for hi-lighting these points. A few errors in the graphical presentation of this report have come to light, which we have corrected – unfortunately the version on slideshare is an older release.

I can confirm that the UK figure for reading blogs should be 11.6m (65% of the active web population). The 32.1% is this universe of blog readers versus the total number of 16-54s in the UK . This is an estimate of the impact of blogging in the total population and assumes that blog writers would be active users.

Any more questions please let me know

The slides have errors on numbers. I sent a list of enquiries and so far received one response from Tom, the creator of the paper. There is a misprint on the Switzerland universe size figure. It should read 1.95m. It is calculated based on local market TGI data which provides, penetration for 16-54s and number of active users.

I agree it has been around forever. Its just now on steroids as we continue to gain greater ability to do it with the growth of broadband and the tools to make it easier for us all. I just got the 3G iPhone and i have a feeling that my social abilities are going to grow even more. Now I can do it on the run all of the time

Universal Mcann makes a poignant note in their statement:

“Social media is an important shift, as it summarizes the importance of interaction, the consumer and the community. The term emphasizes the idea that as a collective it can have as much impact as any traditional media platform. In truth, to claim social media as “new” is slightly misleading. From the beginning, the internet was founded on message boards, chat rooms and peer to peer communication. What has changed is the mass involvement that modern social platforms inspire.”

To that point social media has been around as long as humanity has been around. The friction in the communication between and across large numbers of people has been removed and this is fueling the a requirement that we as marketers must accept, adapt to and embrace in our daily actions.

the b2b impact falls into awareness and authenticity - many of the platforms support awareness - and some can support authenticity and buy-in from the 3rd parties/communities as traditional media did in the past. We're conducting severl grass roots b2b social media programs - using widgets, blogs, viral use/sharing of content... messaging is more segmented and not as controllable

    PS - there's a typo in slide 74

I couldn't resist casting a critical eye over these numbers here: http://groupblog.workasone.net/archives/2008/04/new-globa...

If the authors of the report could provide more details about their methodology I would be interested to read them...

Great stuff. Anyone out there with thoughts on how B2B marketing is being affected?

let me know kdewitte at bulldogsolutions.com

While I can see that there will be some behavioral spill over effects (ie every b2b marketer is a consumer as well), I'm particularly interested in ideas and thoughts re: grass root B2B social media programs
