      • Born Nord, France
      • Parents owned a seed business
      • 1887 went to Paris to study Law
      • Appendicitis caused him to become bed ridden-Mom bought him paints
      • Disappointed dad, he decided to become artists in lieu of lawyer
      • Stomach cancer in late years and chose to do more cutouts, less painting
    • Beasts of the Sea is a painting by Henri Matisse from 1950. It is a paper collage on canvas. It is currently in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. During the early to mid-1940s Matisse was in poor health. Eventually by 1950 he stopped painting in favor of his paper cutouts. Beasts of the Sea, is an example of Matisse's final body of works known as the cutouts .
