  2. 2. What Do Kentuckians Do? <ul><li>Not long ago, most people in Kentucky earned their living by farming. Towns grew near the farms. Other jobs, like running a store or a bank, depended on farming, too. </li></ul><ul><li>Today most people work in manufacturing and service industries. </li></ul><ul><li>Some work in offices: others work in factories. They may repair cars, build homes or even work in the mining industry. </li></ul><ul><li>The things people do for a living in Kentucky tell much about our culture. </li></ul>

  4. 4. Tourism in Kentucky! <ul><li>Tourism is the practice of traveling for pleasure. </li></ul><ul><li>The following two things are related to tourism: Culture and revenue. </li></ul><ul><li>Culture is the ways and traditions of a group of people. </li></ul><ul><li>Revenue is income. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Tourism <ul><li>People travel from all over the world to visit Kentucky. They come to watch University of Kentucky basketball games, bet and watch horses race, or fish in our many rivers and streams. Some come to visit our coal mines, Civil War sites, or Shaker homes. Others come to visit out parks and campgrounds. People come from all over the world to visit our festivals and buy local hand made crafts. All of these things are part of tourism. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Tourism/Continued <ul><li>People who visit places away from their homes are called tourist. You can even be a tourist in your own state. Tourist spend money on food, gas, hotels, and activities. All of these things earn money for our businesses and workers. Tourism employs thousands of people and make millions of dollars for the state. </li></ul>
  7. 7. What Do Kentuckians Make? <ul><li>Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) </li></ul><ul><li>Harland Sanders was born to a coal mining family. When his father died, his mother went to work. He had to learn to cook for his family. He owned his first restaurant 75 years ago in Corbin, people came from miles around to eat his secret-recipe fried chicken. Today, people eat more than a billion KFC chicken dinners every year! Harland’s recipe is so secret that half of it is locked in one safe, and the other lies in a separate safe. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Duncan Hines <ul><li>Duncan Hines was born in Bowling Green in 1880. Today, store shelves are lined with Duncan Hines cake and pancake mixes, frosting, jelly, pickles, mushrooms, ice cream toppings, steak sauce, and bread. Duncan Hines is one of the most famous brand names in America. </li></ul>
  9. 9. United Parcel Service (UPS) <ul><li>UPS is the world’s largest package delivery company. Each day, UPS deliveries millions of packages. The major distribution center for UPS’s Next Day Air Operation is in Louisville. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Jif Peanut Butter <ul><li>The Jif peanut butter plant in Lexington is the largest peanut butter factory in the world. If you spread all the peanut butter made each year in Lexington on a football field, it would make a layer 55 feet thick! It takes more that 1,000 peanuts to make one jar of Jif peanut butter. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Cars of Kentucky <ul><li>Chevrolet Corvette is the most popular sports car ever made. The company that makes Corvettes is called General Motors (GM). They built their assembly plant in Bowling Green in 1981. </li></ul><ul><li>Toyota-In Georgetown thousands of Toyotas roll off the assembly line each year. One of the cars made in KY is the Camry. This is the best-selling car in America. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Papa John’s Pizza <ul><li>Over 20 years ago, a high school student named John Schnatter turned a closet in the back of his dad’s tavern into a kitchen. He began selling his pizzas and people loved them. In just a short time he was able to expand his business. That was the beginning of Papa John’s Pizza. Today there are over 3,000 Papa John’s Pizza stores. Based in Louisville, it is the third largest pizza company in the world. </li></ul>
