This is due to his eidetic (or photographic) memory, which means he can memorize anything. However, he doesn’t always understand the things he memorizes. He is a musician at the arts school and plays tenor saxophone. You can’t say: “My name is Instant,” “I am Jake’s friend,” “I have a photographic memory” etc.
  • Mr. Cyrus Blanchard:  He is Jake’s dad as well as a carpenter. He owns his own woodworking business and wanted Jake to join in as well. During the story, he gets a heart-attack and is sent to the hospital. Mr. Blanchard is a strong person who wants the best for Jake.  You can’t say: “I am Jake’s dad”, “My name is Mr. Blanchard” etc . . .
  • Romeo and Juliet:  This is one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare. This is a tragic love story about how 2 lovers, Romeo and Juliet, cannot be together because their families are enemies. At the end, Romeo poisons himself and Juliet stabs herself.  You can’t say: “I am Juliet/Romeo, I love Juliet/Romeo.” etc . . . .

  • Ms. Pelletier – The Principal of The York School of the Arts:  The principal made an appearance at the beginning of the book when she interviewed Jake for enrollment. She is a very calm and collected woman with an air of authority. (Introduced on page 18-19) You can’t say: “I am the principal of an arts school” “I am Jake’s principal” etc . . . .
  • Page Reference: 7Hint: After Jake’s dad paints this on his van, Jake finally realizes that he has to tell his parents the truth about him becoming a screenplay writer.
  • Bogey is the hard-boiled, cool, ‘hero’ from the movie, Casablanca, one of the classic movies Jake likes best.
