International arrivals to the country registered healthy growth during the review period.Hong Kong has a modern and well-developed transport infrastructure. The countrys ports provide a naturalhub for shipping to and from Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. Tourism has a significant impact on thecountry’s economy. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism contributed18.5% to the country’s GDP and accounted for 16.2% of the total employment in 2012. In 2011, theHong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) launched the promotional campaign ‘Asia’s WorldCity’ to create more awareness of Hong Kong as an attractive tourist destination.ScopeThis report provides an extensive analysis related to tourism demands and flows in Hong Kong:It details historical values for the Hong Kong tourism sector for 2008–2012, along with forecastfigures for 2013–2017 It provides comprehensive analysis of travel and tourism demand factors withvalues for both the 2008–2012 review period and the 2013–2017 forecast period The reportprovides a detailed analysis and forecast of domestic, inbound and outbound tourist flows in Hong Kong Itprovides employment and salary trends for various categories of the travel and tourism sector It providescomprehensive analysis of the trends in the airline, hotel, car rental and travel intermediaries industries withvalues for both the 2008–2012 review period and the 2013–2017 forecast periodReasons To BuyTake strategic business decisions using historic and forecast market data related to the Hong Kong travel andtourism sector Understand the demand-side dynamics within the Hong Kong travel and tourism sector, alongwith key market trends and growth opportunities Identify the spending patterns of domestic, inbound andoutbound tourists by individual categories Analyze key employment and compensation data related to thetravel and tourism sector in Hong KongKey HighlightsFactors driving the growth of inbound tourism into Hong Kong include the country’s low crime rate, cosmopolitan nature and its well-developed transport infrastructure. Hong Kong has cultivated itself as abusiness hub, with an increasing number of businesses being based in the country, and global events andconferences attracting high numbers of business tourists. According to data published by the Hong KongTravel and Tourism in Hong Kong to 2017
  • 2. Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong hosts more than 300 international conventions andexhibitions a year. Hong Kong’s tourism sector is more dependent on international arrivals and theregion’s domestic tourist flows are very low compared to inbound tourist volumes. The main reasonbehind the low volume of domestic tourism is the small size of the population and geographical area. In 2012,Hong Kong registered 841,332 domestic trips, while inbound trips totaled 23.8 million. The government andthe Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) introduced a number of promotional campaigns to achieve growth ininbound tourist flows. Campaigns by HKTB feature seasonal-specific themes such as Hong Kong HalloweenTreats, Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival and Hong Kong WinterFest. The government is making efforts topromote business tourism in the region by promoting meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions(MICE) events. In November 2008, HKTB established Meetings and Exhibitions Hong Kong (MEHK).MEHK is responsible for the marketing and promotion of MICE in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a key businesshub in Asia and is connected with other major cities in the region. HKIA operates flights to more than 160destinations worldwide through over 100 passenger airlines and 6,400 scheduled flights per week. From July2013, low-cost airline Tiger Airways will run the first low-cost carrier flights direct from Hong Kong toJakarta, four times per week. In order to improve the competitiveness of the hotel market and encouragevisitors to extend their stay, the government abolished the Hotel Accommodation Tax (HAT) in July 2008. Anumber of other government initiatives to promote hotel development have been undertaken such as numerouslocations being declared as “hotel only” sites. Proposals to convert old industrial and heritagebuildings into hotels are also under consideration. Hong Kong’s car rental market is one of thefastest-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The market growth during the review period can beattributed to international tourist expenditure, the rapid growth of the country’s tourism sector, the highstandard of road infrastructure and the development of world-class airport infrastructure. Issues such as theincreasing cost of air travel, decreasing dependence of airlines on travel agents and a change in airlinecommission structure to zero percent have made it essential for travel intermediaries to specialize in nicheareas and redesign their products and services according to the competitive business environment. This isespecially important for those intermediaries focused only on air-ticketing services.table Of Content1 Executive Summary2 Market Overview2.1 The Domestic Economy2.2 Travel And Tourism Trends And Issues2.3 Key Travel And Tourism Indicators2.4 Tourism Swot2.4.1 Strengths2.4.2 Weaknesses2.4.3 Opportunities2.4.4 Threats2.5 Country Fact SheetTravel and Tourism in Hong Kong to 2017
