  • 1. Turbulence in America By: Kelly Ritchie, Jessica Wistrom, & Brittany Mitchell
  • 2. Watergate Scandal (1972)
    • President Richard Nixon and his committee ran several illegal activities to get information from their political opponents. Then afterward tried several ways to cover-up using the U.S government. When the scandal became known to the government Nixon was forced to resign.
  • 3. Nixon’s Resignation August 9, 1974
    • The House of Representatives voted to impeach Nixon, Nixon realized this and decided to resign.
    • On August 8, 1974 Nixon gave a speech to inform the nation of his resignation the next day.
    • The very next day, Nixon signed the resignation documents. He gave his last speech to his staff, then boarded the Marine One helicopter to begin his trip to California, no longer a president.
  • 4. Iran Hostage Situation (1979)
    • The U.S supported the emperor of Iran but after the U.S let the Shah come to the U.S for medical treatment (cancer) trouble in Iran started to brew.
    • Ayatollah Khomeini gained power of Iran.
    • Iranian students were enraged because we allowed the Shah into America so they invaded the U.S Embassy and took 66 hostages.
    • Khomeini government took control over the hostages and the embassy.
  • 5. Gas Crisis in America (1970’s)
    • Inflation raised prices of American goods.
    • As Japanese car companies increased sales in America, American sales decreased causing financial problems for major industries like Chrysler.
    • In 1973, a gallon of gas would cost you around 40 cents.
  • 6. Oklahoma City Bombing
    • In April of 1995 a government building in Oklahoma City was bombed and killed 168 people and left more than 800 with injuries.
    • This act was committed by Americans who were anti-government.
    • This bombing is the worst act of terrorism in American history
    • Barriers were put up around federal buildings in cities.`
  • 7. 2000 presidential Election
    • Three candidates ran: -Al Gore, democrat -George Bush, republican -Ralph Nader, green
    • Bush won with more electoral votes.
  • 8. Electoral Voting System
    • How does it effect the people? At the end the electoral votes is what decides who wins the election. That means less say for the people. The purpose is to be able to have a last say in big decisions.
    • How can it change and why do some people think it should be changed? To give all the say to the people, so there is no way around it.
  • 9. September 11 th , 2001
    • Terrorist hijacked four planes and around 9:00 A.M crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center. Flight 175 hit shortly after.
    • the terrorist flew Flight 77 into the Pentagon in New York City. The 4 th plane (Flight 93) crashed in Pennsylvania.
    • A little less than 3,000 people were killed.
    • This was the 1 st attack on U.S soil since Pearl Harbor.
  • 10. In Conclusion
    • If events such as September 11 th didn’t occur then America wouldn’t have felt the need to improve it’s Security. Even though some of the events that America has gone through are tragic, our Country slowly grows from it. The U.S has overcome all of these events and our country is stronger because of it.
