  • An unique style of painting. Xue Mo (薛墨) was born in Inner Mongolia in 1966. The style of music is called Mongolian Long Song noted for its long stretched out melody accompanied by a Horse Head string instrument.   • Xue Mo Her portraits of Oriental women are more than representations of female beauty. Xue Mo's premise is that the composition of these paintings act as a focal point for meditation on such concepts as virtue, beauty, serenity, benevolence, and tranquility. Variously described as "Renaissance", "Chinese Vermeer" or "Medici- like portraiture", Xue Mo's paintings evoke a timeless elegance and a return to pure painting. Critic Katherine Wilkinson has written, "In the 20th Century, many Asian artists have sited, in the human figure, the portrayal and exploration of their own and their society’s identity and history and its changing relationship with other nations and a global culture...Xue considers her work deeply affected by old Chinese culture, its traditional music, calligraphy and early portraiture."

  • You could find from my portrait works that I made all my efforts to express the secret and charming soft feeling in the heart of a figure. Though I grew up there among the Mongolian people I don't know why I am so continuously moved by the softness under the strong and distinct faces of the Mongolian people and love to pursue to it in my each painting. The softness is the energy stimulating my strong emotion and great love. Is the energy coming from the huge stretches of the mountain grasslands? I don't know. Is the energy coming from the deep cold snow weather in winter? I don't know. Is the energy coming from Mongolian tea? I don't know. Is the energy coming from the great aggressive history of the Mongolian? I don't know. Is the energy coming from the deep satisfaction to their very simple and original life? I don't know. But I will keep explore it in my works and collect it in my heart as well as in my body, forever.
  • Xue Mo 2008 Whenever I return to my homeland, a small town in Inner Mongolia, my heart is immediately taken by the inherent beauty to this land. Walking along the boundless stretches of mountain grasslands, observing flocks of sheep traversing the undulating landscape, or by turn, small patches of dried grassland and the minutiae of nature - clear small pebbles, small white flowers - and, especially meeting and talking with the fieldworker's, with their unadorned faces and plain, simple clothes, I experience a deep sense of serenity. I am impressed with the magnificence of this landscape’s inhabitants, including the grazing sheep or cattle which notwithstanding their humble position in this land exude a confidence and dignity.
  • I paint the miraculous and sacred Mongolian living in this magical land. And I ask myself, “What would be the essence under the unadorned face of this Mongolian, with plain clothes, inhabiting the plain streets, the simple houses and shops, of this small, grasslands town? When I visit countries abroad and in particular, their museums and galleries, and, from reading many art books, I am continually drawn to the works of the early Renaissance; masters such as Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello, Hieronymus Bosch, Bruegel the Elder and Pisanello. I am deeply moved by these artists’ intentions and creative spirit, as much as my admiration for the Mongolian and the grasslands. Can the Mongolian living in the grasslands, in my eye, have some likeness, some essence, with the Renaissance people in the masters' works? I hold dear the old Chinese saying that "nature has the same structure with man". And my artistic philosophy is the same as Giorgio Morandi - that I believe more in art for art's sake than in religion, social justice or national glory.  
  • Xue Mo Xue Mo’s approach to the genre of portraiture is unique, situating Asian subjects in a highly stylised manner that is reminiscent, technically and compositionally, of the portraits of early Renaissance artists of the quattrocento period. To Xue these masters epitomize painting in its purest form. Xue draws her subjects from her homeland of Mongolia and is singularly focused on the female subject, impressed by the ‘noble simplicity, natural beauty, and serene dispositions’ of the young fieldworkers. Xue has been working as a full-time practicing artist since 1998. Mongolian Secrets continues Xue’s unique approach to the genre of portraiture, situating Asian subjects in a highly stylised manner that is reminiscent, both technically and compositionally, of the portraits of early Renaissance artists of the quattrocento period such as Piero della Francesca, Fra Angelico and Andrea Mantegna. To Xue, these great ‘masters’ epitomize painting in its purest form. Xue draws her subjects from her homeland of Mongolia and is singularly focused on the female subject, impressed by the ‘noble simplicity, natural beauty, and serene dispositions’ of the young fieldworkers.
  • Xue’s oil paintings are technically exquisite, and offer a compelling contemporary interpretation of formalism. Xue lives and works in Beijing, China, and has had solo exhibitions in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the USA and Canada. Xue Mo is represented by Catherine Asquith Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.
