  • The Monasterio de San Juande los Reyes was founded byKing Ferdinand II of Aragonand Queen Isabella I of Castileto commemorate both the birthof their son, Prince John, andtheir victory at the Battle ofToro (1476) over the army ofAfonso V of Portugal.
  • The Franciscancord runs alongthe entirefacade, it beingthe order thatoccupies thebuilding. The sanctuary ispolygonal withbuttressescrowned withneedles orpinnacles, decorated withroyal arms andlife-sizedheralds, showingthe CatholicMonarchs shieldshining amongtheir clothing.
  • Above the side door there is an outstandingStations of the Cross, showing the Virgin andSaint John, but not Christ. He is symbolized by the pelican placed on thecross, in accordance with the medieval beliefthat the bird was able to feed its young with itsown blood, this being a type of precursor ofthe Eucharist.
  • The cimborioabove the transeptis octagonal, crowned bycresting and decorated withmore gothic pinnacles.
  • The church isdedicated to SaintJohn theEvangelist, patronsaint of King JuanII, for use byFranciscan friarsThe monastery, anexample of Gothicstyle with Spanishand Flemishinfluences wasrestored to theFranciscan orderin 1954.
  • The monasterys construction began in 1477 following plans drawn by architect Juan Guas, and wasfinished in 1504, the lower cloisters having been completed on 25thNovember 1504, the day Isabel laCatolica died.
  • In 1809 themonasterywas badlydamaged byNapoleonstroops duringtheiroccupation ofToledo.A devastatingfire destroyedpart of thecloisters andone of thedomes of thechurch.
  • The seizure andpillaging ofecclesiasticalassets, theexpulsion of thethen currentincumbents ofthe monastery, the Franciscanswho had lived inthe monasterysince the end ofthe XV century(they had had apresence inToledo since1219), togetherthese events ledto an evergreaterdeterioration ofthe monastery.
  • The church was built to holdthe “dynastic mausoleum” ofqueen Isabel the Catholic, dedicated to saint John theEvangelist, of whom thequeen was a devoutadmirer. The use of thebuilding dictated its type ofsimulated bier, surroundedby pinnacles in the form ofwax candles.
  • The chainshanging on theexterior walls ofthe church areespeciallynoteworthy. Theyrefer to theprisoners freedduring the longGranadacampaign andwere hung in1494, as a votiveoffering and asymbol of thetriumph ofChristian faith.
  • The chains of freed Christian prisoners ornament the monasterysgranite exterior facade, as per the Queens order of 1494.
  • Restoration work whichbegan in 1883 was directedby the architect Arturo Mélidaand was not completed until1967.The Franciscan Order did notreturn to the monastery until1954, and indeed returned toa much smaller structure builtspecifically to house thefraternity.
