    2. 2. The Monasterio de San Juande los Reyes was founded byKing Ferdinand II of Aragonand Queen Isabella I of Castileto commemorate both the birthof their son, Prince John, andtheir victory at the Battle ofToro (1476) over the army ofAfonso V of Portugal.
    3. 3. The Franciscancord runs alongthe entirefacade, it beingthe order thatoccupies thebuilding.The sanctuary ispolygonal withbuttressescrowned withneedles orpinnacles,decorated withroyal arms andlife-sizedheralds, showingthe CatholicMonarchs shieldshining amongtheir clothing.

Above the side door there is an outstandingStations of the Cross, showing the Virgin andSaint John, but not Christ.He is symbolized by the pelican placed on thecross, in accordance with the medieval beliefthat the bird was able to feed its young with itsown blood, this being a type of precursor ofthe Eucharist.
    5. 5. The cimborioabove the transeptis octagonal, crowned bycresting and decorated withmore gothic pinnacles.
