  • 2. The Rio-Antirrio bridge, officially the Charilaos Trikoupis bridge after thestatesman who first envisaged it, is the worlds longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town ofRio on the Peloponnese to Antirrio on mainland Greece. The 2,880 m (9,449ft) long bridge dramatically improves access to and from thePeloponnese, which could previously be reached only by ferry or via theisthmus of Corinth at its extreme east end. Its width is 28 m (92 ft) — it hastwo vehicle lanes per direction, an emergency lane and a pedestrianwalkway.
  • 3. The Rio-Antirrio bridge deck might be considered the longest cable-stayed "suspended" deck. Thelead architect was Berdj Mikaelian. The bridge was finally inaugurated on August 7, 2004, a weekbefore the opening of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Olympic torchbearers were the firstto officially cross its length.
  • 5. Due to the peculiar conditions of the straits, several unique engineering problems needed tobe considered. The water depth reaches 65 m, the seabed is mostly of loose sediment, theseismic activity and possibility of tectonic movement is significant, and the Gulf of Corinth isexpanding at a rate of about 30 mm a year. The bridge received the 2006 Outstanding Structure Award from the InternationalAssociation for Bridge and Structural Engineering. In 2011 the bridge was featured in anepisode of Richard Hammonds Engineering Connections. The Rion-Antirion Bridge has been built to withstand the collision of a 180,000-ton oil tankertraveling at 16 knots (a horizontal impact load equal to 28,000 tons), winds of up to 250km/hour, deck movements from seismic activity of up to 2m in all directions between twoadjacent piers and tectonic fault spreading of approximately about 1.6 cm per year (2-5m in125 years). Lastly, with the incorporation of a stringent design for seismic loading, the bridgecan withstand ground accelerations equal to 0.5g, maximum spectral accelerations equal to1.20 g between 0.2 and 1.0 seconds and earthquakes of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale.
