Le Marais ("The Marsh) is an historic district in Paris. Long the aristocratic district of Paris it hosts many outstanding architectural buildings. The Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris. Located in the Marais district, originally known as the Place Royale, was built by Henri IV from 1605 to 1612. A true square (140 m x 140 m), it embodied the first European program of royal city planning.
The Place de la Bastille is a square in Paris, where the Bastille prison stood until the 'Storming of the Bastille' and its subsequent physical destruction between 14 July 1789 and 14 July 1790 during the French Revolution; no vestige of it remains.
The July Column (Colonne de Juillet) which commemorates the events of the July Revolution (1830) stands at the center of the square. Other notable features is the Bastille Opera.
